I've heard we're closer to hiring than furloughing. Is everyone considering the fact that we are aggressively retiring the DC9 fleet? The fleet will be gone in less than two years. Looking at the bid list for December 2009, there are 793 DC9 CAs/FOs. Personally, I doubt we'll furlough but conventional wisdom says 3-5 years before hiring resumes.

This is no place to be spouting off logic. Stop making sense.

We are getting 9 more MD90s next year for growth purposes, with more behind that (60-65 total eventually), and 2 777s. New work rules (NWA side) and FAA rest rules will make it interesting too. And, if we have huge bids (MOABs), there will be a lot of people in training for 6-8 weeks at a time, also waiting for IOEs and TOEs. Also, besides the extra MD90s coming online, RA says we will "grow" again by just bringing back the planes we have recently parked. It is like getting new planes all over again. Do you know how many 757s are parked? Some A333s just went to the boneyard until next Spring. If they do bring up the block hours like they say they MIGHT, it would be like getting a new fleet. You never know........they did just open the application process again...

We're not retiring the full DC-9 fleet, just the 30's & 40's (for now). That is roughly 1/2 the fleet of "9's". According to the guys "in the know" at NATCO we can expect to see the -50's around for a few years to come. They did not spend the money to paint the -50's just to park them next year. I agree they are on the way out, but i'm not buying "less than two years".

If they opened the application process, I think that says a lot. The company must be thinking about hiring.

I think so too, and on another thread in the regionals section, Compass is talking of hiring about 60 more pilots ( no new aircraft are coming for them ). If there were about 400ish hired at Delta, about 60 or so coming from Compass via the flow would make sense.

Delta is allowed to take 25% of the list (360*.25) so 90 would make more sense.

They also keep telling us that our a/c utilization is increasing and that is the reason for hiring. Who really knows?

Of course DAL will not admit to hiring. (Legal tight rope)

Gen is correct, and if you look past the next year the need for pilots is going to go through the roof. It is better to start adding bodies now, than to wait too long and have the operation need bodies to maintain when we would need them to grow. In three years the economy is going to be kicking, and when it is, DAL starts a steady flow of old farts out the door. Even a few 100 a year makes it really hard to replace attrition and grow at the same time

On a side note, I have no idea how they are going to deal with the few years we are going to be shucking 800+ out the door.
