Many of the bible thumpers may not like that DL is supporting gay pride events, but if DL's fares are cheap, they'll keep flying DL. It's quite amazing how the almighty dollar can trump people's moral beliefs.

If you notice, a lot of churches are very well funded. So much for your theory that the almighty Dollar is trumps people's moral beliefs.

When the low cost carrier has higher customer satisfaction in the high cost carrier's largest O&D city - your airline is in serious trouble regardless of what fuel costs in the spot market. When all your high cost airline can attract is those who base their decision on which airline is $1 less on Orbitz, you are ensuring a loss and Delta can not continue hemorraging money.

It has nothing to do with proving a point numbnuts. It's about not funding things that you don't believe in. I'm not going to send a donation to Planned Parenthood because I think abortion is disgusting, so do you really think I would purchase the product of a company that donates to Planned Parenthood when I know that it's the profits from my purchase that are being donated? This isn't about being a "tough guy." This is simply about not supporting a cause that you don't believe in. Companies should stick to business and not social activism.

It is business! They are targeting a certain demographic for advertising. They are trying to do it as quietly as possible. You don't see ads on TV saying "Delta, 1/2 off tickets for gays and lesbians!", do you? Whereas a gay pride parade, well you generally don't go to one of those unless you are that demographic. It's a fine plan and will create more business than controversy.

Yeah, there will be a few militant individuals who will disagree and Delta might lose a few customers because of it, but I'm sure they'll gain much more than they lose. I'm sure just about every airline sponsors things of this nature, so good luck finding a ticket on an airline with your same beliefs. Or will you digress from air travel altogether when you realize that homosexual males use the same restrooms as you in the airport? Will you then petition for separate bathrooms and drinking fountains? Good luck wit dat!

Next month when you get dumped by some girl are you gonna be mad that Delta has some advertising geared toward women?

Burritos:

You make no sense. Who ever heard of advertising that you try to keep as quiet as possible?

The gay community is not that large and for the most part Gays avoid the Pride rallys like white folks for the most part avoid Klan rallys. My office used to be across from the High Museum in Atlanta, on 14th and Peachtree. The Atlanta Pride rally would start & finish in our rear parking lot, in front of Piedmont Park. Most Gays would not be caught dead, "out in the street with all those crazies."

So at best, Delta is targeting less than 10% of a minority which makes up less than 25% of the population in a Gay mecca like MidTown Atlanta. The other 98% of the population either does not care, or is offended.

No matter how you stack it - it is a stupid waste of money - theft of the life blood of our Company by someone who is using Company funds to promote their narrow minded agenda.

That tells me Delta is not being managed for the future.

Do you figure some of Comair's concession money went to this program?

Why does that not make sense? Especially something like this, if you advertise to gays, you wouldn't put billboards up all over the city and run TV ads saying "we like gays, come fly Delta!". That would be a bit over the top. But if you keep it quiet by only advertising at places where gays go (ie gay pride events, gay magazines etc) then its no big deal.

Check out these blurbs I found on google after 5 min of looking:

AIRTRAN:
(Atlanta, Georgia) Singer Elton John's face is adorning 20 AirTran jets.

The move is designed to promote AirTran's launch of satellite radio at each passenger seat.

"The traffic controller this morning was calling it Elton One," AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson said.

Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran uses Atlanta as a hub and is one of the few airlines making a profit.

The airline has contracted with XM Satellite Radio systems to offer more than 100 channels.

The airline would not disclose details of its arrangement with John, who has a home in Atlanta and typically commands millions of dollars for corporate endorsements.

But AirTran did say it plans to give him a 6-foot-long model of a jet and a $50,000 check for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

AMERICA WEST:
America West is offering discounts on airfare to some of the most popular GLBT events. Click "learn more" below next to each event to see how you can save up to 10% off our already low Coach and First Class fares.

CONTINENTAL:
Continental Airlines extends travel benefits to registered gay partners

Texas: Houston based Continental Airlines is now extending travel benefits to registered government sanctioned same-sex partners of retirees.

AMERICAN:
[size=-1]Kootenay Gay Pride spokeswoman Catherine Fisher said: "I'm personally ... In the US, American Airlines is a frequent sponsor and supporter of gay events. ...

Online census discovers gays and lesbians’ favorite brands, TV programs and more
Top Airlines

1. American Airlines
2. Delta Airlines
3. United Airlines
4. Southwest Airlines
5. U.S. Airways

HMMMM Doesn't seem to be JUST Delta now does it? Hey guess what else I found, BUD LIGHT was sponsering the same gay pride event as Delta. Better not drink beer anymore!

You answered your own question. AirTran promotes service (XM Radio) and makes a profit. Delta promotes a book called "Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star" and loses Billions.

Didn't we have a thread just like this a few weeks ago?

What about the rest of the airlines promoting the same type of events that Delta is? Don't leave out key facts just to try to prove your point and make me look bad. Delta is not the only one doing this, and most airlines have been doing this for years! What's the big deal?

If you want to pinpoint Delta's financial woes on this one thing, then so be it. Gotta pin the blame on something to make you feel better? Fine. But Delta is not the only one doing this.

Sure it is.

Greenjeans has his future private island in the Bahamas pretty much secured.

Leo has his future 90 foot yacht parked at his beach house in Nantucket paid for.

The future looks bright indeed.................

I think the thing that alot of us miss these days is that there really is no customer loyalty anymore. Whever people get the cheapest fares, they will go....whether thats from frequent flier programs or just plain giving away the tickets online. It used to really upset me when my airline or mesaba gate agents would completely blow things... not to mention the absolutely piss poor ramp service we get in MSP... (my hate for mesaba ground service cannot be described) but now I just make do with what I have... there's only so many times you can apologize each flight.

"Diversity is a key component of what makes Delta great. We strive to enrich and empower the lives of all of our employees and customers in the hopes that they will each realize their greatest potential."

What about those employees who feel homosexuality is wrong and prefer not to have it in their face when they come to work?. I suppose they dont have a place at the table when it comes to promoting "diversity."

Sorry, talk to your lawmakers about that. Employers cannot discriminate on the basis of sex, ethinicity or sexual orientation because it is a law. And I suppose the above statement is a byproduct of that law too.

There are bigger problems in this world to conquer than this. Suck it up and move on people.

Well, now I have yet ANOTHER reason to avoid BUD Light.

As a professional pilot, I am greatly dissapointed with most of the comments made on this thread. Supporting the gay and pride event is to attract potential customers gay or straight. The gay and pride events is just not for gays and lesbians, they welcome anyone who is willing to show their support. Delta and many other major airlines show their supports too. I do agree that everyone has a right to an opinion, but making a rude remarks about any race or sexual orientation doesnt belong in the airline industry and it defintley doesnt belong on this thread. So what if Delta sponsors the gay and pride events? Delta also sponsors the Atlanta Opera and other events that takes place in Atlanta and other major cities Delta flies too. Does that mean Delta should not sponsor any of this events??? I think most of you with that mentality should really keep your opinions to yourself. If you really have a problem with demographics, then you are in the wrong business. So go ahead and trash talk me all you want. At least I have dignity and pride to show my support for Delta to attract all types of customers.

How about this...sexual orientation doesn't belong in this industry PERIOD. Why is it that people feel the need to go around flaunting their sexuality, race, or other diversities in an environment where it is completely irrelevant and inappropriate? Sexuality, regardless of whether it is straight or gay, has its place...and that place is not at work, nor is it on a commercial airliner. They abuse their rights and freedoms by forcing who they are in the faces of those of us who don't really care or want to know. The only reason they get away with it is our increasingly liberal society that points fingers and yells "discrimination" the second someone disagrees with them and because of companies who use these "diversities" as a marketing scheme to try to make money.

Most gays would not be caught at a gay pride event any quicker than most white guys would be caught at a Klan rally. Delta is wasting money on an offensive fringe element while they are telling folks that they do business with that Delta can not pay its bills.

Which is more important:
(1) Keeping the obligations and promises you have made, or
(2) Promoting alternative lifestyles?

Where I come from a Company is expected to keep its promises.

No wonder only 8% of ASA employees trust senior management. We watch Gerald Grinstein lie about Delta's ability to fund its employees pensions while the Company pi$$es away money.

Why not promote honesty - that is a virtue I think we all can agree on.

2 questions:

1. Where are these rude remarks that you are referring to?

2. If I have a Moral Objection to something I know is wrong why is it I am the one with the wrong mentality? Some of us here have core beliefs and do not like our comapnies contributing to such events.

Using your logic it should be ok for major airlines to be contributing to KKK rallys. They are a demographic too, ya know.

We are not writing about discriminating, we are talking about promoting. And of all the causes Delta has to promote, this is the best use of their money?

If some folks at Delta want to promote anal sex and pedophilia, why can't they collect their own money, like we have to do for the March of Dimes and United Way?

There is no way you can say with a straight face that promoting a book tour for the author of "Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star" is a more worthy cause than the March of Dimes.

Delta is headed for bankruptcy and is so far in debt that reorganization financing may not be available. Delta is #2, or #3, on the list of major airlines most likely to cease operatations. No, I'm not getting over it and if you were willing to take concessions to promote your job, you should also be concerned about Delta's future - if Delta is not around you can bet both pink cheeks on your festive butt that Comair will not be around either.

You can read, so surely you have read, that Delta is headed for bankruptcy and is so far in debt that reorganization financing may not be available. Promoting- ok... well take a look at this:
"Delta employees and their families walked the route of the Boston Pride Festival on Saturday, handing out Delta-branded Mardi Gras beads to the crowd of more than 200,000. The Delta Mini Cooper and D.J. Truck appeared in the parade."

Hmmm exposure to 200,000 people in one day where Delta is probably the only airline promoting themselves is a good investment in advertising in my eye.

Delta sponsers the Atlanta Braves. Not everybody likes baseball.
Delta sponsers the opera (someone else said that). Not everybody likes opera.

Delta's advertising department needs to find niches and promote these areas to be successful. Market share is vital and they need to get it any way they can.

The March of Dimes program is what it is. It's always been private sponsorship of someone walking a distance. That's how it works.

And you say not all gays go to these pride events, that is true. But I'm sure they read about it and hear about it.

To me advertising in niche markets like this is a good idea. Like I said, Delta sponsors the Braves, opera, Women in Aviation and gay pride. If you have a problem with one and not any of the others, that's your problem. Delta wants to get customers from wherever they can. If we had Martians living in a colony in Buckhead (which may or may not be true) you can be sure Delta would sponsor the Martian Pride Festival.

This is strictly business. I read Delta has been sponsoring pride events since 2003. If it didnt bring in additional income then, then why would they continue doing it?

And who says I work for Comair? :)

Well everyone is the Delta family is taking some sort of concessions. At ASA we have had a 3.5 year pay freeze and our contract is under constant attack.

And if you think they're idiots not capable of running an airline maybe you're the one who needs an education. Fostering support and a presence with a segment of the market that controls such a large amount of disposable income is VERY good
business.

Very well said, this guy is a tool

You know, I have to laugh . . . . someone questions the appropriateness of Delta spending money to support a Gay Pride event, and of course, the PC police and the Diversity Nazis come out of the woodwork, claiming that somehow they are being "discriminated against" because their "cause" is being questioned.

I think some of you need to learn the difference between being "discriminated against" and simply "disagreed with", because just because someone doesn't agree with your lifestyle doesn't mean they are discriminating against you.

How's about leaving your love life at home? What's wrong with that? Geez, what a concept.

I agree with you in that there are some radical ideas about diversity out there. I for one wholeheartedly disagree with any sort of program that gives someone an advantage in getting a job over someone else more highly qualified just because they are a so-called "minority". But that is another debate.

Customers are customers no matter their background, and the more the better.

LCC's always have higher customer scores than majors, because people's expectations when they fly LCC's are extremely low. WN gets very high marks for customer service despite the fact that they actually treat customers like retards. If DL (or any legacy) pulled half the stunts that WN did, people would have a fit.

FYI.....
For those of you without marketing degrees. Gays and Lesbians have more money to spend than any other group of people in the US. Delta is just trying to capture that revenue. There is NO difference between this and any other marketing plan they ever had. Its all about capturing a demographic.
