Why work here? I have not flown in 4 weeks and 2 days......and counting, just sitting reserve at home.

I have to spend all day with my family and working on home projects while collecting my 76 hours blended rate.....geez.....terrible.

You guys are right, CAL schedules suck!!!!


Don't work here when they start hiring....you won't build any flight time here!!!!!

If you live in base, it's a great deal. But imagine commuting into either EWR, IAH or CLE and rotting away in a crashpad in one of those cities for 4 weeks and 2 days..... :puke:
 
What a/c and seat are you in? If you haven't flown, I'm guessing you're either in the triple or in the 737 base, which is fat while they do the downgrades.

I was actually going to say yeah they do suck. We do a four day trip to the UK and get paid 16hrs with our "rig", while the DAL crew sitting in the same damn hotel and who we follow back and forth across the Atlantic get 21hrs.

Our schedules, and our contract, suck. We desperately need to fix this in C'08.

WORK RULES, WORK RULES, WORK RULES.
 
I'm sure he was being sarcastic, but a bit of a condescending attitude, don't you think? I can tell you it's not healthy for your company if you are sitting idle for so long. I can also tell you there are many people out there who would love to be in your shoes, so enjoy it. :rolleyes:

You are exactly right and to brag about not being used on reserve is a little short sighted. Trust me, you do not want to be busy as a reserve at CAL. Our weak work rules will have you sick in a heartbeat should reserves be needed like last Summer. Enjoy the slow period and put your energy towards focusing on gettting our union to push for better work rules so that bidding reserve will not be such a crap shoot in the future. The unproductive trips to the UK are a great example of our weak contract language. Keep in mind, Delta is an airline that went through a Bankruptcy and still has better work rules as compared to the concessionary contract we caved in on in order to avoid a bankruptcy filing....

Yeah, no kidding...last Oct I flew 92 hours on reserve.

I am just making a point.... A lot of you complain about CAL on here... why, I don't know......

Anyways, I am a 756 FO IAH.... And I am grateful that I have not worked in awhile.

Commuting is a choice. I did it before and it sucked!
 
this past summer i was worked to every legal limit and trick they could throw at me up until the day of my furlough. it was gnarly.

You can say that again SFR. I thank my lucky stars every day that I turned them down after I hear the PBS horror stories from jumpseaters.

I am all nice and comfy in the left seat of a jet thats faster and nicer than most CAL planes anyway.

Don't get any ideas though, the flowback is gone and you cannot come back. LOL :smash:

Hmm, gear jerker in a 737 or captain in an rj..mm I know which one I like better. LOL :beer:
 
Its a good job and pays the bills. Thats why I work here. Plus the thought of sitting in a cubicle makes me want to jump off the roof.

Yes room for improvement but every place has that. It is what you make it and I have a pretty good life. even being in EWR and commuting!!

I think I would like the paycheck better in the 737..

I think I know what they liked better too... You in an RJ not in their 737. I do not think you told them no.

Sweetheart I flew the left seat of that ERJ. The job I had after that at AirTran pulling gear in a 717 was 10 times better. You keep telling yourself whatever it is you need to. I'd rather sit right seat in the 737-300 round dial at Continental for the next 30 years than to be in your seat. Plus even under our concessionary contract the pay would be better as a career 737 fo.....

We can trade -- I'll take your 16 hr 4 day trip to the UK and you can have my 20 hr, 17 leg, 9 hr overnight, 3 day trip which never gets more than 300 miles from my hub with a 100 hr ERAU grad.

Is CAL great.. that depends on where you came from. Is there alot of things that need improving, Oh Yeah.

There is no perfect job out there. Every place has it's good and it's bad. As a NY'er, I had 2 choices for Legacy carriers. DAL and CAL. Got lucky and got one of them. I wanted to fly international, and like flying passengers. Everyone is different.

The fact is, over the last few years almost all the Legacy carriers were hiring, but they were all in different situations. A couple were and still are sinking ships, a couple were growing and one was holding it's own. Since then, only one is planning on growing and this is after a merger. 2 are still taking on water, one is holding its own and one will dissappear under a merger.

I'm about to go on 2nd year pay. It will be the same pay I had at my regional when I left. But what I did have there that I have here is a 401K that the company contributes to. I also do not commute anymore. To me, that in itself is priceless!

Like I said, it would be great to look back on this thread in 3 years from now and compare what we have then to what we have now.
Nothing worthwhile is ever gained without fighting or working hard for...

It's a hell of A LOT easier flying a big jet accross the Atlantic as opposed to flying 7 legger day with a low time wonder and then do it all over again after a short layover and a 5am wake up.

You totally missed my point. It is not a question of what's easier or not. It has everything to do with the subject of this thread, and for CAL's pilots to take a stand when their contract is up.

I've lost count of how many times some CFI or commuter guy tells me how he'd like to "trade places" with me in a heart beat, all the while silently implying that he'd gladly do my job for less. That is the real threat, and as long as we have folks willing to do that, this industry will always be in the shiatter.

1) Schedules not bad...I have NEVER flown this little with a company. I have 225 hours this year, and yes I live in base and bid reserve. Not bad on 3rd year pay either.

2) Why is it that every pilot I meet that works for a regional always tries to justify to me why they stayed? I never try to justify to them why I went to a major. Personally I don't care why they stay or go.

3) Truth is the truth. CAL is a great place to be. I would imagine that most of the complainers here are commuters or came from Express (Most XJT folks are strange to begin with...lets face it they mostly all paid for their jobs back in the 90's.)

There's that condescending attitude again. What compels you to call out XJT pilots as weird? I flew with a whole lot of folks at XJT, and I can count on one hand the ones who were "weird". Also, I think the percentage of PFT folks there is probably lower than most regionals. Just keeping it real, dude....

Yep, he is. I don't even think a majority of CAL pilots would agree with you. You need to listen a little more in the crew room or you just have low expectations.

Are you this clueless as a PIC? I wish they would issue a notam when you're in the sky so I could stay home.

I don't regret leave XJT one bit... wouldn't change a thing. And you turned them down? :confused: It's doubtful you'd even have made it through training, let alone probation.
