Let me explain it to you too...

Because Air Line Pilots are not regulatory. So when we need to effect change we have to have unity and strength in numbers.... its called consensus...

If one pilot called his Congressman and said we have to change fatigue policy, he will be asked who are you? The pilot can reply.. We are air line pilots... And he will be asked who is we? The pilot can only reply.. We is me.

However, if you have the President of a professional organization got to Congress and say I represent 60,000 airline pilots.... you will get the attention of the Law makers..

Now, if you really want to get things done ALPA needs to be able to go to Congress and say..we represent ALL airline pilots.




All management has to do is come up with some unsafe scheme at SKYW and ALPA has to spend time and energy to fix it...

Take it to the Int'l level.... ALPA is the only pilot respresntative at ICAO. The APA, IPA, NPA, SWAPA and others are not represented. If two pilot groups were represented it would only create confusion...

All while big changes are going on internationally that will effect all of us.... guess who gets to have a say.

I don't care if Skywest is unionized and neither should you. It doesn't affect you, your beef is with ALPO. Do you know how long ALPO has been fighting the rest and fatigue issue. 20+ years. Obviously they do not know how to get the job done. Look at all the other issues they are fighting, and tell me how long they have been working at them. It is a very weak union, and is self-serving. I am glad ALPO was in Vancouver working out some rest and fatigue issues for pilots. Why Vancouver? They could not meet at a Holiday Inn in the States? Sounds like a vacation, sounds like ALPO. And that is why nobody cares about our union. Pilots and congressman.

How is not having a union spineless and how is it pulling down the industry? This downward spiral is occurring with or without unions. Unions allowed scope to be breeched and unions can't protect against bankruptcy. So why should we have voted in a union when our management really ain't that bad? I am proud of my no vote and my company. It is funny how pissed you are that we didn't vote it in. You think it is because the young pilots don't want to threaten their upgrade. When, think for a sec. You wouldn't be worried about that if you didn't know that it could affect it. That is a good thing? Besides it wasn't just the young guys who didn't want it in. Skywest pilots benefit from union negotiated contracts and other benefits without contributing to the cause. You think they would have those pay and work rules if management wasn't just trying to keep them from getting a union on board? All of the things in their "employee handbook" are things that were copied from union negotiated contracts. If it weren't for unions, then Skywest pilots would be paid far less and treated much worse. Some of us are tired of them freeloading off of us. It's about time that they joined in the fight and contributed to the cause.

The FAA is there to say, that's unsafe, and provide rules that give an airline structure. Not a union.

YOUR pay rates may be based on union contracts. But in the real world we call it capitalism, the employer will pay competitive wages or they won't be able to find employee's.

Believe it or not but there's alot of people out there in the world that aren't in a union and live just as good or in many cases a better life style than their union brethren.

I have had good luck with that. The company I work for doesn't have a union.

The FARs keep us plenty safe, along with some common sense and the balls to tell the company no when you have to.

Our upgrades are performance based not seniority based. So I've moved up very quickly. I also make more than alot of regional captains.

Plus I'm home just about every night of the week, and I get weekends and holidays off.

So how's that union thing working out for you?


BTW you'll never get around working the weekend at the airlines, simple fact of life people want to fly on the weekend. If you want a 40 hr a week, weekends off, union job, go tighten lug nuts at Ford.

I'm sure that alot of accidents are the result of a FAR violation, which is exactly my point. Don't violate the FARs and you'll be safe. I don't see how you figure common sense won't get you far. If somethings not right, don't do it. How much simpler can it get.

You are right that safety is also a result of a company that wants it, but the company has just as much riding on the line to keep it self safe from a economic stand point since passengers don't want to fly on an unsafe airline. I think it has alot less to do with what the union tells them. There's ALOT of companies out there that aren't union and are still very safe. Take for example USA Jet.

There are two problems with your theory:

1) Yes, the company should have as much of an interest in it as you, but as you know, the $$$ rules. You need someone who works for your side.

2) You equate an company that is safe(no accidents) with a company that is safety-minded. There are many companies who have good safety records and yet would score highly on risk analysis. Many companies succeed in spite of themselves, not because of what they do.

ALPA won't keep you safe; only you can do that. However, ALPA has had a major hand in creating and promoting many of the major safety advancements in the aviation industry. The Central Air Safety Committee provides a day-to-day oversight that can only be provided in-house. Some companies actually have effective internal auditing, but more often than not, the data will directly from the line.
