...this might go through just as quickly as the United/UAL merger...

FWIW...a buddy described the angst and irritation he felt (as a United 727 FO) when a jumpseating US Air pilot sat on the flightdeck pontificating out loud about moving to the 777 and the chance to fly international (obviously unaware of any fences or other union negotiated merger issues). I'm sure a bunch of junior AWA captains are going to be VERY upset if they merge seniority lists and try to take AWA cockpits. What about recall rights? Will a recalled US Air pilot have a higher number than an AWA pilot currently flying? I'm sure the MECs are going to have a LOT of pain and anger to deal with on both sides.

Good luck to all...

I would take what your buddy said with a grain of salt....it seemed to cut both ways.

Honestly...

I have serious doubts about AAA ALPA's willingness to bring the furloughees along during a merger.

I know I joked about them giving up the furloughees recall rights in exchange for spicy-mustard in the crew meals, but sarcasm aside I think we can expect that to be not far from the truth.

If the merger goes forward the AWA and US Airways MEC's/merger committee's will get together and try and come to an equitable merging of the seniority lists. If they fail it will be arbitrated.

Either way it will use ALPA's own merger policy. Career expectations, no windfalls. I believe the US Airways MEC will sacrifice the furloughees in exchange for a better integration for the active pilots.
In addition I would expect career-long fences implimented which will protect the existing AWA pilots.

I doubt anyone at AWA will lose their job. But their upgrade time will get one HECK of a lot longer. And as for the US Airways furloughees? Well, i'm sure we'll get the traditional ALPA one-finger salute.

Good luck.

Resume Writer for C62 MEC Chair!!

Perhaps, instead of those only with shares showing up, why don't you all picket the meeting. That will get the news out there. Contact your unions to set it up.

What day, time and where is the meeting?

Just a thought...

Kathy

Great idea.... have you ever thought of running for C62 MEC Chair ?? We can use some one with some bal....uh, I mean backbone in there rather than our former Chief Pilot and the ALPA de-certification specialists we have at the helm now. I like the way you think, kid!!:D

This is a bad idea.

I don't know about this, it seems that a lot of the problems USAirways had over the years originated with the inability of the company to function smoothly following the mergers that created it. Other than the fact that these carriers don't overlap many routes and they both have airbuses I don't see it. Mergers are complex and they take a lot of time to smooth out; sometimes they never do. All I can see here is Airways pulling AWA down with it. Good luck to all involved if this happens......you're going to need it.

Maybe a USAir guy can answer this: I thought the USAir guys gave away certain recall rights in the event of a merger in LOA 93.

I think the immediate fight is going to be who gets knocked to the street when GE takes 60 of their aircraft back. If they are taken from both airlines and both airlines are operated separately for some time, then both sides could see significant furloughs. This may happen before any seniority list discussions are held.

This is going to get ugly...

I hope you're right with the career long fence thing.

Ugly indeed!

It's my sincere desire that this shall be the case, however, history has shown that it's not likely to happen. When's the last time ALPA merger policy was followed? I know it wasn't during OZ-TWA or ALG-PDT because external factors precluded it. We still have no idea how this thing is gonna come together so it's just wait-and-see.
