Caveman, I can appreciate your reasonable response. But, the economy is the number one factor here. To quote puddlejumper101, "there are not many people that are better off today than when Bush became President."

That couldn't be more true. I've looked at my family, friends, and myself, and I'm not better off today than I was then. Do we need a president who's tough on terrorism? Of course. But, we also need one who isn't wreckless about it, which is what I feel Bush is all about. We need a president who will tend to America's needs (and our soldier's needs) first. Bush hasn't done that.

Things have changed during Bush's watch, but no one seems to remember it's congress that holds the purse strings and congress passes legislation. If things aren't going well then congress has to share the blame. Who's running the house and senate? Most of the economic decline has come about since the Democrats took over the house. It is not all about who is in the White House.

I don't think Bush is reckless about terrorism. A bit myopic maybe. There are other things going on that need attention too and I think he misses that point.

The Messiah.
Why yes!
And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.
The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.
When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”
In the great Battles of Caucus and Primary he smote the conniving Hillary, wife of the deposed King Bill the Priapic and their barbarian hordes of Working Class Whites.
And so it was, in the fullness of time, before the harvest month of the appointed year, the Child ventured forth - for the first time - to bring the light unto all the world.
He travelled fleet of foot and light of camel, with a small retinue that consisted only of his loyal disciples from the tribe of the Media. He ventured first to the land of the Hindu Kush, where the
Taleban had harboured the viper of al-Qaeda in their bosom, raining terror on all the world.
And the Child spake and the tribes of Nato immediately loosed the Caveats that had previously bound them. And in the great battle that ensued the forces of the light were triumphant. For as long as the Child stood with his arms raised aloft, the enemy suffered great blows and the threat of terror was no more.
From there he went forth to Mesopotamia where he was received by the great ruler al-Maliki, and al-Maliki spake unto him and blessed his Sixteen Month Troop Withdrawal Plan even as the imperial warrior Petraeus tried to destroy it.
And lo, in Mesopotamia, a miracle occurred. Even though the Great Surge of Armour that the evil Bush had ordered had been a terrible mistake, a waste of vital military resources and doomed to end in disaster, the Child's very presence suddenly brought forth a great victory for the forces of the light.
And the Persians, who saw all this and were greatly fearful, longed to speak with the Child and saw that the Child was the bringer of peace. At the mention of his name they quickly laid aside their intrigues and beat their uranium swords into civil nuclear energy ploughshares.
From there the Child went up to the city of Jerusalem, and entered through the gate seated on an ass. The crowds of network anchors who had followed him from afar cheered “Hosanna” and waved great palm fronds and strewed them at his feet.
In Jerusalem and in surrounding Palestine, the Child spake to the Hebrews and the Arabs, as the Scripture had foretold. And in an instant, the lion lay down with the lamb, and the Israelites and Ishmaelites ended their long enmity and lived for ever after in peace.
As word spread throughout the land about the Child's wondrous works, peoples from all over flocked to hear him; Hittites and Abbasids; Obamacons and McCainiacs; Cameroonians and Blairites.
And they told of strange and wondrous things that greeted the news of the Child's journey. Around the world, global temperatures began to decline, and the ocean levels fell and the great warming was over.
The Great Prophet Algore of Nobel and Oscar, who many had believed was the anointed one, smiled and told his followers that the Child was the one generations had been waiting for.
And there were other wonderful signs. In the city of the Street at the Wall, spreads on interbank interest rates dropped like manna from Heaven and rates on credit default swaps fell to the ground as dead birds from the almond tree, and the people who had lived in foreclosure were able to borrow again.
Black gold gushed from the ground at prices well below $140 per barrel. In hospitals across the land the sick were cured even though they were uninsured. And all because the Child had pronounced it.
And this is the testimony of one who speaks the truth and bears witness to the truth so that you might believe. And he knows it is the truth for he saw it all on CNN and the BBC and in the pages of The New York Times.
Then the Child ventured forth from Israel and Palestine and stepped onto the shores of the Old Continent. In the land of Queen Angela of Merkel, vast multitudes gathered to hear his voice, and he preached to them at length.
But when he had finished speaking his disciples told him the crowd was hungry, for they had had nothing to eat all the hours they had waited for him.
And so the Child told his disciples to fetch some food but all they had was five loaves and a couple of frankfurters. So he took the bread and the frankfurters and blessed them and told his disciples to feed the multitudes. And when all had eaten their fill, the scraps filled twelve baskets.
Thence he travelled west to Mount Sarkozy. Even the beauteous Princess Carla of the tribe of the Bruni was struck by awe and she was great in love with the Child, but he was tempted not.
On the Seventh Day he walked across the Channel of the Angles to the ancient land of the hooligans. There he was welcomed with open arms by the once great prophet Blair and his successor, Gordon the Leper, and his successor, David the Golden One.
And suddenly, with the men appeared the archangel Gabriel and the whole host of the heavenly choir, ranks of cherubim and seraphim, all praising God and singing: “Yes, We Can.”

Ok, so maybe I was a bit emotional when I went on my Bush tirade. Fueled by the fact that my cousin is being shipped to Iraq...for what?
It does hit a nerve when Captain's start their whole Republican rant and how this country will fall apart under Obama. I never said I was a Democrat, just a concerned and honestly irritated citizen. All of this complaining about how Obama will sink this country seems a bit ironic considering the current state of our union. Republicans are soo worried about what Obama will do and totally disregard what Bush already did. Except for a few, there are not many people that are better off today than when Bush became President. Just look around you, it is not good. I drive my car to the airport paying $4.00 a gallon to get there. On the way I see house after house for sale, or abandoned (foreclosed). I get to the airport and hear how thousands are being furloghed, just as I pass a bunch of 18 year old kids being shipped off to Iraq to fight some war that no one wants (not even the people we "liberated"). I get screened by some TSA "rent-a-cop" who is there because the threat of Al-Queda is as great today as it was after 9/11. So why should I have to listen to a right-wing Republican airline pilot rant and rave about how this country will fall under Obama!! News Flash!! We have already fallen...and Obama had nothing to do with it.

Dog gone it, now I have to jump into this mess. Your cousin is being shipped off to Iraq because he volunteered to serve. Period. He is not being sent there because Bush lied, or because we want to control Middle East oil. He signed on the dotted line and raised his hand and swore that he would do whatever Uncle Sam asks him to do.

I am grateful for his service.

Kugel, first bring up your "special research" on global cooling. Then blame CNN for everything and anything you can possibly think of. Finally, question his patriotism for not being an FFDO.
Yeah, these clowns seriously start asking you what you're doing on your days off like they want to hang out. Of course, you can't because you're at the gun club all day every day.

Well said, however, the tragedy is that the Bush admin abused the service of all the men and women willing to serve their country. Iraq was a HUGE mistake, period. They (including the republicans AND democrats in congress) should have known better.

My impression is that with Obama at least we have a window of oppurtunity to create some open dialoge with the mid east and perhaps create a little more stability which in turn could lower the price of oil.
Bush's "My way or the Highway" methods have failed misarably.

Kugel,

I feel your pain man and I probably ain't gonna vote for Obama. Few weeks ago I was starved for reading material before a trip so I picked up the first book from the gf's collection, "The Audacity of Hope". I figured what the heck I'll skim it over a two day trip.

Sure enough three hours later I was being regaled by Capt 'NRA Bag Sticker 5X' with tales of proud Americans defending their homes thanks to the god given gift of Karl Rove. I waited about five minutes then proudly broke out my reading material with a keen eye. The look of disgust on Capt White Male's face was freaking priceless...

I've heard often that Bush represents the american dream b/c a C-student was still able to become president.

To me, that's the opposite of the American Dream. You've been completely average at everything you've ever done, but still had the political clout to become a 'fighter pilot' (though noone knew where you were) and eventually the president.

He's the worst of Ayn Rand's political looters.

And there really is no argument for the shape of the country.

And caveman-- are you really trying to say that congress in less than 2 years has put us in this economic mess we are in right now?
Are you serious? B/c that's just dumb. You all have been brainwashed and i truly regard you as such. How do you feel about having an Australian media mogul control your every thought.

Real patriotic.... i'll observe your opinion in support of Bush when you tell me where he was during vietnam.

Critics tend to focus on policies when the real issue is the administrative incompetence that has permeated the Bush administration from top to bottom and side to side from day one.

+1 on the Ayn Rand comment, with the caveat that even her fertile mind couldn't have imagined the enormity of what's transpired over the last 8 years.

cronyism.

political favors do not make a president.

but hey: war services and oil companies have done fantastic!

Kugel,
I know what you are talking about. Recently I had a CA go absolutley ballistic because I very calmly and in a normal tone of voice said I will not vote for McCain. He literally started yelling so hard that spit was coming out of his mouth. He said Obama was an idiot, a Muslim extremist, a terrorist, and his first act after taking office would be to attack Pakistan. This attack he said would lead to the start of World War III and that would be the end of the world. I was dumbfounded that someone who graduated from the Air Force Academy and is a Captain at a major airline would actually go off like this. Scary...

He made my avoidance bid.

I usually respond w/

"Herb's a HUGE democrat" (which is true)

"So the only uncorrupt airline exec is a democrat- and you find nothing important about that?" The comeback...well thanks for the $$$ Herb. Sincerely, W

There's nothing better in this country than a democrat who subscribes to capitalism and patriotism.

And in any case- what proof do you need of the neo-con way than the current rape-state of the country. Sure.... you guys are fantastic in power.

Obama 2009-2017

If Herb is a HUGE dem, he sure gives a lot of $$ to Republicans:

http://www.newsmeat.com/ceo_political_donations/Herbert_Kelleher.php

McCain, Kyl, Hayworth, BUSH(several times) Kay B Hutchison and RNC(lots of $$$) just to name a few. To be fair, he also gave to Oberstar and some other dems but a majority went to Repubs.

Tips for silencing cockpit ideologues:

1. Introduce yourself with, "I'm not just a Jehovah's Witness...I sell Amway too!"
2. The classic Pull My Finger bit.
3. Interrupt their screed with "giggity" anytime they use the words "head" "come" or "nail".
4. Reply only in Klingon.
5. Carry a small bottle of water with you, and flick some on them. When they ask WTF?...tell 'em it's Holy Water and you wanna see if their skin sizzles.
6. Fake a stroke.
7. Tell 'em, "The guy in 6B thinks you're hot"
8. Or, "I used to think that way too, but the tinfoil made my head sweat."
9. Ask them if an airplane placed on a treadmill moving in the opposite direction, at the same speed...would take off.
10. Two words: "Crash Ax"

Priceless.

11. "Hello, pro standards?"

F-102 pilot Texas Air National Guard <--he barely flew the thing, and it largely consisted of straight-and-level proficiency flying. Who couldn't do that?

You, based on you list of aircraft.

No, Bush doesn't get a pass from me regarding the state of the economy. Unlike you though, I see the big picture. The house and the senate bear a large share of the blame.

So in your world Rupert Murdoch's Fox News is all bullshiite and Ted Turner's CNN is the paragon of truth. That about right? Talk about brainwashed. When was the last time you objectively listened to Limbaugh, Hannity, or any other conservative talk show host? I spend several hours a week listening to NPR and the BBC. I want to know what the other side is saying and thinking. I'm not afraid of some original and different thought. Unfortunately, they rarely surprise me. They are as predictable as Hannity and Limbaugh. There is one difference though. In general, conservative thought survives and thrives on it's own merit. In almost every case liberal thought requires government support and private donations to stay on the air. NPR and the BBC are perfect examples. They are both government sponsored entities. I know of no such government sponsored conservative media outlet. OTOH, the only recent liberal stand alone attempt, Air America, failed miserably. Why is that?

'64-'68 Bush was at Yale. Then he was in the Texas Air National Guard. He used educational deferments and Guard service to avoid going to Vietnam. Imagine that! Who would do such a thing? Uh, lets see....oh yeah! Bill Clinton for one, except he didn't serve at all. He just used deferments and connections to avoid going. So what. So did almost everybody else that could get out of it.

Kugal,

We've all flown with both types, right and left.

Remember the guy at TWA that had a bible converted to be all about aliens. Everything dealing with Jesus was changed to aliens. Though I didn't agree, he was entertaining.

At CAL (I'm told by old heads) we had (retired) a guy who thought ultra violet rays were coming through the cockpit windows. So he would wear tin foil on his head and ask the others to do the same. I personally think it would be funny to wear tin foil for an entire trip.

Finally. I flew with a liberal captain who just went on the entire time about Iraq and GWB. He really lost it when I told him I have been to Iraq. It was as though I poured acid on him. His final comment to me as we were leaving the cockpit was "So do you think it would be worth while for your son to die in Iraq?". He wasn't conservative but he certainly was, and is, a tool.

It's on both sides.

Hate is an easier sale?
Eureka! I finally figured out why liberals are so vindictive and prone to personal attacks. You guys see any differing opinion as being hateful. Therefore you must hate in return. That's all you know how to do. If I disagree you hate me. Now I understand. Thanks.

Using your example, if someone set fire to a house and a fireman ran in to fight the fire and was killed, then it would be his fault for signing up to be a fireman. The person who set the fire isn't responsible? That's just dumb. You think the C.I.C. isn't responsible for where he sends the troops because they "signed for the dotted line".

Brilliant

What you have said is exactly what I think and feel. My cousin signed the dotted line because he loves his country, and to give his family a chance they otherwise won't have. He isn't wealthy, has a wife and a kid. The Army is the best avenue available to him and his family at the present moment in time. So he is going back to Iraq...putting his life on the line for his country and his family. There is a very good chance (like with any other soldier) that he won't come back...he isn't complaining, but is scared. Scared he won't see his kid again...and for what?? Freedom?? I would love to think so, except for some reason Iraq and freedom are currently unrelated. He might die thanks to Bush's blunder...not freedom. If the plan was to capture Bin Laden, and do away with Al Queda then I would accept it...however last I checked Bin Laden was never in Iraq and Al-Queda came to Iraq after Saddam fell. So with this going on, the last thing I ever want to hear is a right-wing Republican telling me how aweful Obama is. Yet it is this same Republican party that is sending these soldiers into harm's way for what???

Hey Puddlejumper-

Those 18-year old kids are the bravest people you are ever likely to meet. We have an all-volunteer fighting force and they can't wait to make their contribution to freedom, even if it costs them their lives.

Wake up, it's not 1967 anymore!

A lot of the current problems are self-induced....Did GW force us all to go buy houses we couldn't afford because we believed they would continue to appreciate at 10-20% per year...

I'm not a huge GW fan....voted for Ron Paul in the primary.....but much of the current problems are caused by all of us...Quit looking to the federal govt. to save you from yourselves.....

The economy isn't really that bad.....If oil prices come down and the realty market gets back to normal.....we will be fine....

I'm worried if Obama gets in!

MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples). McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax.

OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales
>
How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.

MCCAIN 15% (no change)
OBAMA 39.6%

How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that 'Higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market, yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.'

No, but his steadfast refusal to have any sort of regulation on any industry, including mortgage lending, directly led to this problem. A little regulation is a good thing.
