While Southwest Airlines plans to scale back the number of planes it will add to its fleet next year, American Airlines said Thursday it is accelerating the delivery of six additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Fort Worth-based American (NYSE: LUV) has decided to move up the delivery of the planes to the first half of 2009.

American announced in March that 47 Boeing 737-800 aircraft would begin arriving in 2009 instead of 2016 under its existing purchase agreement with Chicago-based The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA).
As part of that announcement, American moved up the delivery of three of those aircraft. American said Thursday it plans to continue moving up the deliveries of the remainder of the planes from their current 2013 to 2016 delivery timeframe into the 2009 to 2012 timeframe.
Eventually American plans to replace all its older, gas guzzling MD-80 fleet with the Boeing 737-800s.

This is pure flame, but I couldn't resist. Where's the SWA F/U?

Thats smart. the economy is slowing but they keep buying airplanes and incurring more debt.
seriously though, I guess its good since they will be able to retire the mad dog.

This doesn't mean !@#$ if they are retiring the same number of airframes. That's the question and the answer.

?????

Why doesn't American and other MD80 operators re-engine their planes with fuel efficient engines? It would be an bigger version of the 717.

Smarter than you think. The MD-80 is too expensive to operate. It's about time.

Those MD80s are almost as junky as the USAirways 737-300/400s (East) airplanes out there. Time to dump those airframes (and allow Allegiant to buy them).

The interiors on AA's 80's are quite nice. No planes are as junky as U's East 37's. Take it from a DFW-CLT commuter.

They could just buy AirTran and get a bunch of 737's and 717's. Keep the airplanes, $h!tcan the employees.

I'll bet they even have some "Two Great Airlines, One Great Future" hats and t-shirts left.

Problem solved. ;) TC

There you go TC, opening a can of worms! You looking forward to class?

I'll admit, I bit on the article.

Well played.
