While Southwest Airlines plans to scale back the number of planes it will add to its fleet next year, American Airlines said Thursday it is accelerating the delivery of six additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Fort Worth-based American (NYSE: LUV) has decided to move up the delivery of the planes to the first half of 2009.
American announced in March that 47 Boeing 737-800 aircraft would begin arriving in 2009 instead of 2016 under its existing purchase agreement with Chicago-based The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA).
As part of that announcement, American moved up the delivery of three of those aircraft. American said Thursday it plans to continue moving up the deliveries of the remainder of the planes from their current 2013 to 2016 delivery timeframe into the 2009 to 2012 timeframe.
Eventually American plans to replace all its older, gas guzzling MD-80 fleet with the Boeing 737-800s.
This is pure flame, but I couldn't resist. Where's the SWA F/U?
