1) where do you want to live?

2) Do you want to commute?

3) Not sure what the Uni-Ted upgrade time is, but at AK the Jr capt is 9-1/2 yrs!

4) Do you have any desire to fly wide-body's someday?

It's your choice,

Left out all those important details.

Lives in SoCal... wants to move to either Seattle or Denver long term, could commute short term, no more than a year or two. No desire to fly int'l widebody, upgrade not important. Classes are within 2 weeks of each other.

Offers from both, but really want to go to SWA?

Ready..... go!

Have you flown the 737? You want to spend the rest of your career in it? And in the right seat at that.

If you want to live in SEA or DEN, there are guys with less than a year on property holding 737, A320, 757/767 in both LAX and SFO. DEN, is the most senior base which also means when the retirement machine really spools up that's where all the movement will be.

Oh and United pays better too.

Alaska is a better choice for you. Best of luck.

If you'd like a non-divided work group, a desire to not be accused of being a scab even though you weren't born yet, you don't get off of grievance wins for crew meals, and you'd like to not feel like you're in a Salem witch hunt, go to Alaska.

You are indeed correct.

Did you see in the other thread United has not won airline if the year since 1974. Unbelievable... Why this airline isn't still called Continental and based in Houston, I have no idea

Anyway... United needs future captains, so Alaska is the way to go for this guy. Or for that matter, anyone else who doesn't care to step up? MO: move on

You are an angry man Ex. I've run into and socialized with many LCAL and mixed crews in PEK, NRT and TK North (non scabs). Everyone gets along fine and seem to be on the same page. Then there are the 10% from both legacies that play the martyr, (bit*h about the ISL, LCAL, LUAL, "we did it better than you" ...you name it,) that will be miserable no matter what. If you want to be part of the 10%, that's your choice.

Look at the reality of the competitive marketplace. Alaska is going to get destroyed by Delta in Seattle. Long term Alaska is a dying airline.

That makes the choice United without question.

United is the first U.S. airline to intelligently use the B787 to serve a secondary city in China. That is the future that you should be apart of.

......and SWA, WTF? 20 years to upgrade in a 737.

United. 5000 retirements coming, giving you better QOL sooner. With a better schedule, you could live in SEA or DEN. UAL will give you variety in flying, so someday if you do want to try intl Widebody, you could. DEN is a UAL base, but SFO is also one that is commutable from SEA.

A decade ago, Alaska but today, United. Alaska is big question mark in many areas. At the end of the day, it's all about QOL and earnings. There is way more potential for that at United than Alaska. JMHO.

I heard it would be years to hold Denver at United. And commuting from Den to any other UAL base can be bad. Isn't Sfo notorious for not being commutable due to weather?

All domiciles can be fluid. When I got hired in 2000, newhires could get Den. Based on the high number of vacancies, that will probably happen again some time in the future.

Having commuted to SFO on a two hop commute, I didn't find it 'not commutable'. It simply requires advance planning.

Alaska dying? UAL tried to kill us in the late 90's, when they were the big international dog in SEA. How did that work out......

I don't think the UAL "investment" into SEA was even close to this one. DL is pretty much moving the Narita hub to SEA, and feeding it with a lot more flights.

Alaska is defiantly dying...

7 JD power in a row, record profits, contracts settled.... All signs of a death roll.

I never stated that, (deFIANTLY? I hope it isn't defiantly dying) I just said you or the RNP guy shouldn't compare the UAL build up in the 90s to DL's planned build up now. Big difference. Good luck sport.

Thanks, but with lower costs, better customer service, and more departures to more destinations than any other airline, Alaska is not depending on luck.

I've done DEN-LAX, way easier than the DEN-LGA/EWR/IAD/ORD/IAH commutes I did.

By what metric do you come up with this stat? UAL has more 737-800's than Alaska has total airplanes. DAL has more MD/717's than Alaska has airplanes.

One day of departures/destinations from either EWR or ATL crush Alaska's total operation.

Delta could buy a controlling share of Alaska in a hostile takeover with this years profit alone.

The discussion point was concerning SEA.

Typhoonpilot[/QUOTE]

You guys kill me with this 20 years to upgrade thing at southwest. You are basing your rough numbers on a point in time when the airline is/was stagnate and going through an aquisition. It won't be that way for ever and in fact will start decreasing by the end of next year.
