2 things: 1) I got told to continue without the type. They give you 6 six months to complete the training. 2) I fly with many captains that are much younger than me. It is never awkward, they are the captain, I'm not! My job is to support him/her regardless of age or previous aircraft flown. Besides I luv jerking the gear and flaps and not having any responsibility after being a captain for over 27 yrs.

My class last Sept. was half civilians, half military. So yes Airtran does hire military, who knows why though, theyre only good for standups.

Military guys/gals are great at marching so you will appreciate them more if you ever need to form a picket line.

I thought you liked stand-ups?

Which aircraft type are newhires getting into most often nowadays - 717 or 73G? What percentage of each class would get each type? I know that AirTran will be getting more 73Gs in the future - so, could you bet that a right seat on the 73G will be most likely?

Personally, if I went that route from my regional gig, I would likely prefer the shorter trips in the 717 but that is just my preference...

Does Da' Tranny have any day trips out of ATL?

AWWW YEAAAHHH!!! But Dude, some of da Peeps in the ATL likes doing uther trips cause like it all depends on how much you like driving in dat traffic. Lots of da Peeps from North of the Aeropeurto say dat commin in everyday is like a pain.

Trips be like all over the place....1-2-3-4 and Stand-Uppers, so there be somethin fer everyone.

Naw, bro, you can't buddy bid wit Ty Guy (unless you gets him to send you his bid prefs or somethin). I know it be everyones dream, but don't worry, you'll git-er-done like someday bro.

If you want the 717, you can probably hold it, as the 737 has gone senior in the last 3 classes and I hear usually goes that way.

That is assuming they have 717 slots - word in the training center right now is that most hiring through the summer will be into the 737. Last 2 classes went 6 737 / 2 717 and 6 737 / 4 717. Our class before that went 4 737 / 9 717.

LONG time on reserve for 717 pilots hired right now, probably 8 - 12 months if hiring stays the same ratio of fleet mix.

Even so, I'm looking forward to being out on the line! Reserve lines are averaging 14 days off!! GREAT company to work for! Good luck!

I wish the lump sum folks would just enjoy their lump sum and let those of us in the first half of our careers be able to progress to the better jobs in the industry, instead of bottling things up for us. How many years do these lump sum folks have5? 8? Come on guys, you have made it to the top and prospered, how about sharing the best scraps that are left behind after the collapse of the profession instead of holding onto it yourselves.

Interesting that AirTran is hiring the lump sum folks. Apparently AirTran is going to treat Delta's applicants a whole lot better than Delta treated Eastern's refugees.

Can you imagine? Many of the Delta guys walked out the door with over a million (some with a whole lot more) and they will have at least 5 years in the left seat again before hitting 60. I'm sure they would have rather Delta remained healthy, but still, they did pretty good in aviation.

...and they dont seem to be helping us furloughees get into the door. I checked the ALPA boards for any info..notta.
Ive had an app in since 2002!

If ya'll would get rid of that stupid 500 hours 121 PIC requirement you'd get a lot more good qualified applicants.

Dude, it's more about limiting the number of apps they have to process, than it is about anything else.

You can also typically get background checks back quicker on someone that's been a 121 pilot than someone than it is to verify someone that's just been flying 91, and not subject to any federal background checks. With the former, the company can get them on property and out of training quicker. Important stuff when they are hiring at the rate they are.

I can't imagine Airtran is loosing any sleep on not getting the hotshot big iron 91/135 only guys.

Don't sweat it.

It's all about the money. If they can hire a 55 year old they only have to pay him for ten years...... You think I'm joking? The old farts here are giddy because they are sure that this November the age 60 rule is out the door. Had a check airman on my jumpseat last week that's 59 and he might as well have been dancin around like a little school girl. He tried to rationalize how it was good for me. As a captain, it don't make much difference to me now, but to the new guys it sucks. When it comes, it should be phased in slowly so that no one group gets a windfall.
As to furloughs, we've hired more ATA guys than Southwest, alot of TWA'ers, USAirways (some that left before they were furloughed but didn't want to fly the 170) etc. etc. etc. Having talked to someone that works the Air Inc. seminars, that is a key to geting called. I know it sucks to have to pay to play, if you hate Kit so bad you can go to an OBAP or Women in Aviation conference for a meet and greet. (If I were single, I'd go to the women in aviation deal, find a wife and let her support me while I did domething outside of aviation) Just my 2 cents

Im always SOL when it comes to those conferences - gone, etc. I think I will make time for the next one. Does Airtran do interviews there or do you just get your foot in the door by talking, shaking hands and handing over an app?

It is my understanding from the people that actually go and represent the company, that this is a prescreening process. It cost ??????? money to go to these things. I asked why are we paying to go to these things when we have resume's out the wazzooo. They say that this is an efficient vetting process. I asked, what would stop me from coming and blowing sunshine up your a$$ to make me look good to get a job. They said, because you talk to different people and they can figure it out. It sounds sort of like survivor, if they all like you, they don't vote you off the Island. I stopped asking questions, obviously I don't see the big picture. On the bright side, you might get to meet "the coach", that'll probably be your most pleasant experience with him.

Copy. They ask a few Qs - find out about your background, etc. I got it. Meet n greet. Who is The Coach?
Seriously, thanks for the reply (hard to get those on this board at time). I am going to make time for the DFW one in July...I like the south and yall have always been great to fly on, even when in a Delta uniform - to me that says something. When I dated a girl in Chi-town - I always made it on time too!!! :-) If Delta knew I flew yall vs us..:-)

Don't worry about the coach, just talk about team effort and teams win. Look for a guy in polyester pants with no belt and saddle shoes (he says they're coaching shoes????) and oh yeah, you got to be a dawgs fan

LOL - I like Coach. He reminds me of my first Lear Chief Pilot. No B.S., that's for certain. He seems to like to see a "Captain's Captain" kind of attitude, walking tall, looking good, speaking calmly yet confidently, and showing your willingness to do whatever it takes for the passengers and operation completion.

That said, I've never seen him at an AIR, Inc conference and I've been to at least 2 a year for the last 5 years or so. I went down to see some buds who were doing the AIR, Inc thing on Saturday and I could've sworn I actually saw Floy P on his way out the door.

p.s. Just being a football fan and being able to intelligently talk football for 30 to 60 seconds is a great way to make a good impression. You don't have to be a Dawgs fan; I actually told him I was a Fightin' Irish fan and he still gave me the thumbs up. :D

Yeah, Floy was there. He did the group address, but I didn't see him during the face-to-face part. Nice folks, hope to get a call.

Thought that was him. He scooted out right after the group address as people were making bee-lines for the recruiters.

Good luck to you!

Good luck to all. I personally thought the AirInc was worth the effort since I think in large part, it helped me get the interview here.

Really a good place to be. AirTran has the potential to be an absolutely EXCEPTIONAL place to be, and I'm hopeful the ship can get pointed in that direction and stay that way for the long term.

Just a few observations:

Tom Lewis (coach) has complete and total disregard for the pilot contract. I'm working on my 9th year here, give it time, you'll see what I mean. He comes across as a decent southern gentleman, and he is, until you need his help dealing with scheduling or a contract interpretation. Coach is a 110% company man and the pilots contract means nothing to him when it's 4th down and inches (you like that, don't you, Steeler fan?)

As for flying with the Gray hairs, it never bothered me. It's only a problem if you let it. I upgraded at 29 and flew with guys older than my dad.

Watch out for this guy. Little Spanish dude commutes from FLL-ATL. CRJ captin with ASA 6 years. Met him on a AirTran flight. We talked and he blabbed the whole convo on this site. Untrustworthy, sneaky little bastard.

Are you talking about me?

If so you're way off, my brother.

I'm not Spanish, never flew an RJ (trans states J32 in a prior life), don't commute from FLL, I am a bit small in stature (you got that much right), and I'm very pro-union.

Ty Webb, Best Pilot, JimCav, FL717, Steeler Fan and others know me, you obviously don't.

Nice sports reference. Someone must have typed that for you, because I know, based on your vast knowledge of sports, you don't know the difference between a Roethlisberger and a Baconburger, both of which are loved by most Pittsburghers.

BTW. I briefly flew the J32 at Trans States as well, before they left. "Clear,Flat,Cap" my brother. :D

Thanks for setting me straight. I didn't see a post from "puddlejumper" anywhere on this thread so I assumed he was talking to me. You see what happens when you ass-u-me.

I forgot all about "clear-flat-cap", that seems like a long time ago.

I thought there were only 2 kinds of fish, fried and baked.
