Don't tread on those who went after you simply because you failed to plan for retirement!!
LEROY,

"...failed to plan for retirement!!" That's a pretty bold statement. Tell us EXACTLY how you're in any position to speak about other people's financial planning. You have no idea what motivates other people. The reasons are proportional to the number of people involved.

If you junior birdmen mean "get out of MY seat, you old fart" then be a man and say what you mean. But, keep in mind that some day YOU will be one of those old farts you want to boot out...and it'll happen a lot faster than you think.

get out of MY seat, you old fart!

There, happy?

But seriously, this is just the way the cookie crumbles. Back when the "older" birdmen were "younger" birdmen, that is more than likely what they thought about the "old" man in the left seat. Now, due to circumstances beyond anyones control, some have lost their pensions and some will see greatly diminished returns, but to wish for an abolishment of the age 60 rule now, is a selfish as wanting the "old" man gone then.

I have prepared for retirement. I don't want to fly when I hit sixty. I don't want to fly now. I want to play golf. I want to go home to my 18 year old wife. I want the right to determine that for myself. That is all.;)

"I want to go home to my 18 year old wife".

Man, isn't she over the hill:)

The fact of the matter is that the financial side of the house was never a consideration when the age 60 rule was first enacted. It was strictly an age/performance issue. For those of you who were not around then, ALPA fought tooth and nail against the rulling intil sometime in the late 60's. As our demographics of the airline industry changed the original objections were pushed aside so that the younger crowd could move up more quickly and in turn push the older guys aside. I can't argue with that desire, been there done that, but it has little if anything to do with how we got here.

It has only been recently that the whole upgrading and financial scheme of things has entered the debate and I am afraid that since this was not original intent of the ruling it will not stand the test of time as this debate festers into the future.

ALPA in its wisdom will find that the majority of the pilots left at the legacy carriers will sway over to the other side of the fence as the industry continues down the slippery slope of oblivion. If you are a furloughed pilot from one of these carriers, you might as well face the facts, it just will never be the same, either in pay working conditions and especially pensions. Perhaps you will want to provide for your retirement in such a way that the age 60 will have absolutely no impact on your life style, on the other hand that 18 year old might decide that the buff gardener looks like a pretty good deal and your retirement plans will be slightly off course.

DaveGriffin,

And, by the way, I was a serious GS'er and make no apology for it so no one needs to burn up any electrons yankin' my chain about THAT !!! As I said before, when you are staring the reality of retirement in the face, the world will take on a whole new appearance....trust me.

I bet you didn't have many friends back in Nov/Dec 2000 with all your gs'ing. Probably got your truck keyed a few times.

You'd lose both those bets. I didn't say I GS'd in 2000, did I ? But the fact that some DAL pilots would consider keying someones car in the parking lot, like some 13 year old juvenile delinquent, doesn't surprise me very much.

I could be wrong as I have been many times in the past but I don't think any airlines for an ICAO country can fly into the US. Seem that I recall an American fellow, flying for JAL that had to overfly the US from I think YVR down to MEX simply becauseof this rule. I know that none of the guys flying for Air Atlanta Icelandic can fly into the US if they are over 60. Does anyone have a definitive answer for this?

Did a very brief stint with a Canadian outfit. Among the pilots was a 63 year old ex-EAL guy. On his schedule was a note..."No US flights". That's all I know.

Who did you work with up there. I did alot of AirTransAt 757 IOE's and did get a Canadian ALTP.

By the way last month first civ. space flight pilot was Mike Melvin (age 63), hope he had one of the young F/Os for help. Sorry forgot he was solo.
