It certainly leaves more questions than it answers: Did he call FSS for a preflight briefing? Why wasn't he using VFR flight following? Did he have a hand-held GPS? Why didn't he use VOR to VOR navigation around the ADIZ?

Obviously coached by his lawyer not to say anything of significance.

So it took them a Blackhawk helicopter, two F-16's dropping flares and a 90 degree right turn to realize that something was wrong and for the first time to figure out where they were?? So much for the whole pilotage thing.

That's a classic situation in aviation - and many other fields. While doing something (or not doing something) may be technically legal, it may not be very smart.
