Is there any way to get eight pax in a CJ2 with two pilots, no belted lav, and then fly two hours? Thinking of a replacement for our 550. Thanks

Yeah if you have two lap babies :)

First off, unless there is a floor plan i'm not aware of, you won't have enough seats. Second, you will most likely exceed zero fuel weight. Then you will most likely exceed max gross weight.

BEW approx. 7750
pilots x 2 360
pax (175 lbs) 1400
Bags 200
Fuel 3000 (1st hr 1100 lbs, 2nd hour 900lbs, 1000 reserves)

Ramp Wt 12710 (Max 12500)
Zero Fuel Wt 9710 (Max 9300)

Replace your 550 with a CJ3. Internal demensions are almost identical but cruises faster, bigger baggage, better avionics.

Yeah but if we placed an order tomorrow I think it would be about 2+ years before we have it. Its also a little bit above our budget. With the fuel prices going through the roof, we were thinking of getting something that burns a little less fuel.

But, a CJ3 would be awesome.

If you like the 550 interior but just need better fuel economy you could check out the Bravo. Same airplane but with the 530 engines, would save you a few bucks in gas and get you another 40 knots or so.(395 to 402 kts normally) Hot section is on demand and TBO is 4000 hours, most that I have seen go to TBO without needing the hot done. I have not specifically done a comparison between the old 550 and bravo but when I honchoed one we always came in cheaper per year on maint. than our hanger neighbor did. (CII)

Good used Bravos used to be had for 3.5 to 4 mil, I think they have gone up a bit in the past couple of years but still cheaper than Used CJ-2 and new 3.

It will do the eight with one on the crapper as long as none are too tubby and not much baggage. Full tanks will get you 1500 miles with good reserves(1900 miles to flame out, or so the book says!! Never tested that one out!!!)

Have you looked into buying out someones position who already has one on order, and is looking to get out of it?

We had a guy at the airport I'm based at do that a couple months ago. Should have his airplane by the end of the year. Have no idea how much he paid, but it might be worth a looky.

You said looky!

When you buy a position like this are you usually paying more that what the person holding the position paid. I'm guessing yes?

Another company based at the same FBO as we are looked into buying someones CJ3 position, and like someone said it was about $300,000 above book value. Thats a fee we don't want or need to pay, and anyway a CJ3 is a little above our budget.

The original plan was to get a 560 next year, but with the fuel prices going through the roof, we started looking for something that is a little more fuel efficient. One of our few requirements is to be able to carry 8 pax, and in the 550 we have now, we pulled out the galley next to the door and put an aft facing seat in its place.

Anyway, who knows what we are going to do, there might almost be a requirement for a second airplane next year, but alot hinges on how bad this hurricane season is. Thanks for all the input, maybe the boss will go off his rocker and have us get a G5 or something....lol

Edit: Where can I find some info about the Bravo on line, like fuel burns and so on?

The fuel burn in our CJ3 meets or exceeds that of our CJ2, not to mention it is faster. As for buying a slot, we paid a premium for our slots, but the price of the aircraft has increased since the original order was placed. We were able to purchase the airplane for less than if we bought if from Cessna today, and took delivery 2 years sooner. The market for CJs is good and will likely remain good for the unforseeable future. You should get all of not more of your money back when you resale it if maintenance is kept up.

Groundpounder,

If fuel price is a concern, and if you need 8 pax, then the King Air 350 could be an option, while waiting for an increase of the CJ3 used market.

A friend of mine had a very good deal for a Pro Line 21 KA200 with Raytheon recently. This could work with the 350.

Cessna has some performance data online in tne form of sales brochures and such, it is pretty accurate from what I remember (although optimized, meaning that all conditions are perfect)

Real life I saw about 170 GPH in 1+ hour flights, short hops a little more due to lower altitude etc. It is fastest in the FL 330 to 350 range(398 to 402 KTAS), fuel burn can be further reduced if you go to FL390 to 430, though you will be down to about 365 KTAS or so.

Maintenance was pretty clean for us, no major items, brake resevoir leak, GPWS issue(Install error, cessna tech did not load the correct software update to correct TCAS and FMS conflict issues, no problems after correct update) 1 Starter generator failed 50 hours shy of TBO for the part. A few minor things such as static wick loss, etc.

Other than that only had normal phase checks and tire replacement, normal wear and tear stuff over the three years I managed and flew it. Zero engine issues other than the S/G mentioned above.
