32 New-hires @ FDX today

Just saw on VIPS they started 32 newbies today! Holy-crap.....do we have the staff for that? Is there another class like that in March too??

I was suprised by that also. I wonder if there's going to be 32 in the next class on Feb 28th. NightFlyer

I hope that was matched by 32 retirements!!!

I remember hearing a rumour recently that FedEx was going to start hiring 54 or so per month. Everyone was saying then that it would be impossible to train that many at a time. Well, maybe it's not impossible after all.

Back when the Postal contract hiring began 2000-2001 they were doing 50 a month. A friend of mine was hired into the back of the 10 and did indoc and then was told to come back in 2 1/2 months for his training.

I know a couple of folks on todays class that had originally been hired to the 28 feb class...lo and behold they were on todays class--we seem to be moving right along!!...

From my CP a few days ago....

48 for Feb
78 for March

They wanted 118 or some big number close to that for March, but just couldn't do it. Fred is fired up because now we are behind the curve. JL always asked for more people, but the bean counters had always said no. Now we are trying to catch up.

The list for the back of the 727 only has 130 people on it at the end of this training cycle. They need to hire and train at least 370 more people this year to get that number back up to the normal 500 or so in the seat. That is going to take some massive hiring. Hard to believe the company would put itself in this position. Wonder if it was the same bean counters who decided that we didn't need to make the 72s RSVM compliant? Makes you shake your head that is for sure.

Congrats to the latest 32!

Numbers that were briefed at a meeting last week:

78 new hires for Mar - 62 will go to the back of the Boeing
16 will go to the back of the DC-10 or right seat of Boeing

30 each month thereafter. However, everyone thinks the 30 number for upcoming months will increase but they just haven't officially changed them yet.

Good luck to all.

I too scoff the bean counters--sometimes it doesn't seem like they know how to run an airline.

Then I look at the stock price--its doubled plus some in the 3 years I've been here. I don't like the short term thrash either--but we've managed to "absolutely positively" get it done...and the company has made a mint. Perhaps our "optimumly run airline" isn't the optimum for the company or the shareholders.

That aside...I hope the hiring continues unabated. Everyone likes the seniority and if you are stuck right now on R days you know you'll be abused. I miss the "good old days" of being able to drop a trip now and then....and that doesn't happen as a B-727 FO right now!

I don't like the short term thrash either

So what's gonna happen during the next peak when we're still waiting on a new contract?

Albie: I have to agree, we need to be able to run lean. But when you bump up against training restrictions because you have ignored the inevitable for too long and you start leaving freight on the ground, you have perhaps cut into the bone, so to speak.

The market is constantly changing and at least we are reacting as quickly as we can, but we could maybe make more if we had enough 72 F/Os to at least fill all the standby periods! I had one the other night with just the Captain and me. Sounds like a musical duo from the 70s.

It is hard to argue with success, though, so I should probably STHU!

Feast of famine, at least its feast time right now. Can't wait to get all the new folks and aircraft on board.

Oh yeah, and one other thing: One more day of retro pay!

Keeping my fingers crossed...

I'm just hoping to get an interview...no luck yet. I keep updating the app and wishing I was given the shoot...maybe the call will come soon...I would like to try and get in earlier, rather later on the wave! Keeping my fingers crossed...

dont know the exact numbers breakdown, but some to the back of the 10, some to the back of the Boeing, some to the right seat on the Boeing, and believe it or not.....they are offering, but not forcing, 5 right seats in Subic!

The breakdown:

12 B727 FOs
14 B727 SOs
6 DC-10 SOs
5 Subic Bay AB300 FO positions available

And hiring numbers...

2/28 class - around 16
3/14 class - around 16
3/21 class - around 32
3/28 class - definite 48

It's a pleasure to finally be aboard.

???

Just curious...did all of the 32 that started class, or anyone with a future class date, get hired WITHOUT having their FDX sponsor schedule a "special meeting" with JL or an ACP???

I know last year it was pretty much a requirement but with so much hiring going on now I was wondering if guys were getting the call strictly based on their app profile, with a couple of LOR of course.

Congrats to all the new hires fortunate enough to be on property, we are glad to have you! I still count my blessing everyday that FDX called me first out of all my apps I had on file:)

Thanks, PT

Any idea of some of those 32 newhires are furloughed from another airline?

I am not sure if any in the class were furloughed, but I have a friend who is furloughed from a big 3 airline that has an upcoming interview with FEDEX.

.

Per my CP....

Furloughees from other majors (except USAir, those guys have always been ok)are a case by case basis. What they are looking for is what the furloughee did. Did they take on another flying job, like at a regional or corporate? Teach at a sim place? Stuff like that. They want people they have already moved on, not sat around for the last few years hoping for their recall, then all of a sudden want to go to FedEx.

Yep, exactly what FEDEX 1 said. My friend has been flying for another airline, had an app in with FEDEX prior to 9/11 AND before being hired by a major airline, and has a sponsor with at least 3 other letter of recs from the inside.

When his sponsor went into his CP to recommend him the CP basically told him the same thing as FEDEX1 stated so his CP couldn't guarantee him he would get an interview even though he met the mins, but in the end he got the interview.
