Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Virgin America Inc. is looking to add up to 10 more aircraft next year in a sign that the loss-making carrier's business model may be gaining traction.
The airline has run up substantial losses since launching a low-cost, high service model from its San Francisco base in 2007, but it turned profitable during the summer and is targeting a full-year operating surplus in 2010.
Virgin America, like other carriers, had trimmed expansion plans amid the sharp decline in passenger traffic, and deferred some of the new Airbus A320s due to boost its existing fleet of 38 aircraft.
However, spokeswoman Abby Lunardini confirmed industry speculation that it was back in the market to boost capacity, despite widespread uncertainty about the strength of any recovery in demand and pricing power. "We're out in the market actively pursuing new aircraft for next year - perhaps as many as 10 additional aircraft," she said.
Virgin America, which is still embroiled in controversy over its ownership, reported a net loss of $15.8 million in the three months to June 30, compared with a $64.4 million deficit a year earlier. It lost $40.3 million in the first quarter. But revenue rose by 47% from the prior year's quarter to $135.9 million and average costs fell sharply.
The carrier is the creation of U.K. entrepreneur Richard Branson, whose Virgin Group owns 25% of the airline. Its launch was delayed by almost two years after a delay in securing regulatory approval linked to its ownership structure. To comply with U.S. law, 75% of the voting stock must be held by U.S. citizens.
Washington-based Alaska Airlines Inc. (ALK), which competes with Virgin America on West Coast routes, has taken up the industry baton in calling the airline's legality into question after U.S. investors opted to trigger a sale clause.
Virgin America has said it complies with the law and that the U.S. Transportation Department is aware of its potential changes. The airline has been seeking alternative investors after two private equity groups that provided the initial capital exercised options to sell their stakes earlier this year.
A Transportation Department spokesman has said it continues to review the protests from Alaska and others, as well as calls for a public hearing into Virgin America's ownership status.

Remember when flight attendants were called stewardesses and everyone thought they led fascinating lives (witness the recent episode of "Mad Men" when Don Draper hooked up with a "stew" or the movie "Catch Me If You Can")? And then society changed (progressed, some would say) and we stopped thinking that way.
Well, the CW Network wants to take us back to those fun-filled days with "Fly Girls," a reality show that the network said "takes a 360-degree look at the lives of the charismatic jet-setting flight attendants of America's hippest new airline: Virgin America."
The show, which will debut in mid-season, is about "real, down-to-earth young women who happen to have landed in an exceptionally glamorous, high-flying career filled with exotic locations and handsome strangers," said Kristen Vadas, who oversees reality programming at the CW.
Sounds like a wild ride, but someone might want to let Vadas know that Virgin America also has male flight attendants.

VA Stews...

I flew on VA as a pax a few months back and one of the female FAs was probably the hottest stew I have ever seen. She was "Penthouse" hot.... I was favorably surprised. You certainly won't find those types of women at Delta/NWA where the average FA age is 75...

Minimum of 70 starting in Dec. Determined by "ownership" lawsuit outcome.

Don't let one centerfold skew your impressions too far. We have plenty of San Francisco's finest too.

Even in College Park after dark I'm a gonna get that sunshine

huh?

Anyway, good luck to VA. The do have a good product I must admit. BUT....the requirement to have all pilots stand up front and do a welcome aboard announcement ought to be re-thunk. Ive seen a couple who really embarresed themselves. It was diificult to watch.

Oh they're hot all right just ask any of the other male fa's with spiked frosted tips, artifically labored queer voice, and tampon strings hanging out over their belts in the rear coupled with a walk that looks like that 26 inch cylinder of tungsten steel pounded them for 48 hours straight.

The 5 hot females we have here have a pathetic endless following of married captains telling that " My wife doesnt love me were getting seperated story " that the cart donkeys just bite on every time in hopes of tapping into that 200k salary

I'm really glad I am not you. You have not a positive thing to say about anything.

Awaiting the how awesome your life speech and what a jackass I am reply...

I tried to hang myself today and the rope broke I was wearing a VA t shirt....

reminds me of an email I got form an old friend when we were both at Gemini and I asked him how his trip is going in Channai India.. his response after a week at the hotel and no flying "Well, I tried to jump out the window, but their sealed.. I tried to hang myself but the shower curtain rod broke, so then I tried to slit my wrists and I realized I'd brought my electric razor!, but yeah.. I'm going postal!"

lol

Unless VA can pay its pilots a liveable wage in SFO I hope they bite it. Its not that its low cost. My hats off to the SWA guys. They get payed better than us legacies. You guys at VA make as much as our Expressjet guys do. Shame one yourself for being stupid. I remember flying the 1900 and being offered a job flying A320 for Skybus. I laughed then walked away....... I cant be the only one with dignity...can I?

I liken Southwest to the ugly girl at the end of the bar after a long night of drinking and getting shot down... she' s only hot cause your expectations are lowered. While some have always wanted to work for Southwest for a variety of reasons, the vast majority of people I knew wanted to work for DAL or American or UAL.. and make 747, 777 or MD11 captains pay the way it was back in 2000-2001.

The reason SWA gets paid better than Legacies is that Legacy pilots have all voted in major pay cuts since the 2000-2001 time frame while SWA never have... Falling for management tactics playing on fear and such.. A braver bunch (us pilots and I count myself as part of the problem) might have told them.. "Fine, you can't pay me well, then shut the damn place down!"

So when a start up like VA comes along and pays crappy wages, its' painted as the bad guy, when the real bad guys are the various ALPA's that accepted 50% pay cuts rather than do like the men did at EAL.. and "shut it down"

Let's hear it for the real men....

Why did you apply to Skybus knowing what their pay structure was?

Either you have a short term memory, really young, not very bright, or all the above.

Please find out how SWA pay was in relation to the legacies in their second year of operation.

Curious minds want to know.

I just love the Skybus bashers and how they come from such a high perch.. I'd be curious how many of them are "regionals" guys that accepted $13K/yr jobs all in the name of "building time for the majors" or how many of them vote for politicians that have empowered management over labor...

SX was a symptom of the reality of the industry in 2007.... it was a job for many.. a place to work, tread water, what ever.. For some, it was a place to fight the good fight.. just research the speed at which the IBT vote passed and what margin it passed by... and read about the 4 that were fired for standing up to management (the new managers, not the ones that were fired by the greedy investors)..

It was a symptom .. not the cause of the failure of our profession. The cause is the various ALPA (not so much APA) MEC's that gutted their working agreements in a panic to hold on to their all important seniority!

I spent a few weeks with American, but consider that pilot group the only body in modern times, at least since those guys at EAL shut it down, to be worth their weight as union men.. they held their ground, and that's why today they at least still have their pensions and a decent paycheck compared to the bottom feeders at UAL, US Air and other ALPA carriers that are just now getting to where APA was sitting at all the time (Waiting for that bar to get raised)..

Yes their uniform went from a REALLY GAY F/A Uniform to just Plain Gay Pilot uniform now.... sorry couldn't resist, joking :-P

About the flight attendants... I must admit Republic has some of the best looking flight attendants I have ever seen.

that's because many of them came over from when Skybus went under.. SX had the best FA's I'd ever seen... they hired very un-PC like in that department.

Are Moderators supposed to be contentious or make contentious remarks? How can you do whatever it is you are supposed to do objectively? Is the post above really wise?

Or is it all just about being a hall monitor? Just curious.
