It will be interesting to see how this plays out

So I guess if the union can not negotiate this then the age 65 could still be in affect at any given time  why would the company even mention the age 70? They must want something.

At any any rate the 40 to 55 year olds still continue to take it up the tail pipe in this business

For legal reasons the Union PAC had to remain neutral, otherwise they could be facing DFR lawsuits. Not sure what changed with this age 70 thing. The Union lawyers signed off on it thou. The other dilemma facing the union was a recent survey showed nearly 70% of the pilot group favored a mandatory retirement age. About half of those were for age 65, other half for something more than 65. The Union message board is very "lively" right now :uzi:

I support any age limit 100%. 65, 67 or even 70. Just give me something. We younger guys need an age limit. And we need it now.

I’d like to know where I’d be in so many years. I’d like to plan my career a little better. I’d like to be a Global captain some day, Fly all over the world and make big bucks. Without an age limit, I have no idea if I’ll ever get there. An age limit gives me hope. Something to aim at

Right now it feels like a holding pattern.

When I was hired half of our class was retired Airline/Mil. This was pre-9/11, so age 60 was in effect. Within 6 years all but two were out to pasture. They were the Military guys who retired in thier 40’s so had extra income earning years to fill. Both of them retired from their second careers before age 65.

Point being, and I know it’s a small cross section, but the majority of people on their second careers will be gone by age 65 or there abouts (if not sooner). In fact the people over 65 at NJA amounts to around 1-2%. The over 70 crowd, half of them are out on MLOA.

I think the outrage (that probably is a bad choice of words) is somewhat misplaced. It does look like we’ll be getting an expires by date if the FAA reauth bill goes forward as planned.

The bill overwhelmingly passed the House, will be considered by the Senate in a month or so. Age 70 is still in the bill, along with a lot of other items like 10 hour min rest for F/A's, restrictions on airline seat spacing, requiring an ARC to look at 135 rest rules, etc.

The number of NJA pilots that will be forced out in 2019 if this survives the Senate is in the double digits. One of our major Union Volunteers who has been very involved with this originally thought the age rule was totally motivated by $$$ but since the company backed age 70 he now thinks it's really more about owner perception and safety. The company's cost savings was very large at age 65, but pretty marginal at age 70.

I have been watching the age 65 v 70 thing for a while. One consideration not mentioned on many boards is the fear by the company of disability claims. If you don't have a mandatory retirement age, and a pilot loses his medical, is he retired or is he disabled? If he is disabled when do his disability payments stop if there is no mandatory retirement age?
