Looks like Delta will be hiring more than the advertised 300 pilots. They are now saying 600 for next year.

However, there are 7000 apps currently on file.

There is not a pilot shortage, only a shortage of pilots willing to fly for insultingly low wages and lifestyle.

Yep and most of those guys have applications on file at FedEx, Southwest, JetBlue, Virgin America, American, United, US Airways, etc. etc. Everyone of these places has the same 7 or 10 thousand applications on file.

Not saying there is a shortage, but trying to use the number of applications on file is a red herring because people are applying to all of these places and they have many of the same applications on file.

Probably 600 per year, for the next decade. Throw in AA and UAL, and that means 15,000 retirements over the next decade, just for the big three alone. The Cargo companies also have plenty of over age 60 pilots ready to go. The pilot shortage will really show itself when the Regionals can't find enough pilots with 1500 hours (or 800 from an accredited Univ). The UNIV programs are pretty expensive, and I doubt they are churning out as many pilots as they did before. The Regionals will see the shortage first.

7000 minus the 300 or so from Emirates who have no chance thats 6700

I have to agree with the General here. Eventually there will be a shortage, but it will show up at the bottom side of the Regionals when they will be challenged to find anyone with 1500 TT. I predict it will begin getting hard for them to find anyone in 6-8 years.


PS- Good news if that DL number is up to 600 now.
 
7000....as was pointed out, that means there are about 7000 total pilots looking to break into the legacies from their present position. I'm guessing there will be more retirements then that in the near future. Coupled with the fact that the regionals will have a very hard time losing more pilots and having to find higher time new hires. That in turn could force the mainline carriers to outsource less, which means even more hiring........looks like a looming shortage to me.

Rumor has it 600 is all they can handle. With the large amount of retirements coming and the resulting internal upgrades as a result (AE's or advanced entitlements), that number is about all it can handle. That means higher monthly averages for all fleets, and probably lots of greenslips. The training dept will be very busy.

Its hard to find women in the States I guess because they are looking for Expats pilots from the ME and the great quality of life of there,,,,,,

If it is a myth, then why is the CEO of one of the 3 largest majors MOST worried about a pilot shortage? I heard he is worried that his airline will not be able to staff the planes that they have programmed for mainline, in a few years.

And, why did Jet Airways (an Indian carrier) just announce hiring pilots into a JFK base? No Indian carrier as ever had US basing until now.

Andy, why do two Chinese airlines now offer US pilot bases? Until a year or so ago, no mainland Chinese airline had pilot bases outside of China.

Starting, of course, with the regionals having the worst pay/QOL.

I also expect crappy 135 operators to have real problems as well. Although I bet lots of FOs will work for free to get to 1500 hours.
