how can that be? those fantastic meals GL always tells us about and the european layovers!!!!!

Depends where they were when they were initially furloughed. If they were in the last group to be furloughed, they very well could do Europe along with ice cream sundaes if they go to the NYC 767ER or even 765 (767-400). If they were closer to the bottom guy from DL that was furloughed (TK), then they wouldn't see much Europe at all. But, when retirements start in full, everyone will move up quickly, and ice cream sundaes may be had by all who choose INTL flying. The meals you speak about are tasty, with a salad, soup, choice of entries, and choice of desserts. Then, you also get a choice of breakfasts, usually granola cereal plus fruit, or some sort of an omelet, plus fresh croissants. Most people are full after one meal, so most don't eat both, but you can if you wish. Going back to the US also has two, usually a lunch and a snack before arrival.

The layovers themselves are nice. Nice hotels, good locations. Everyone finds a restaurant they like, and crews often eat together, at least the pilots do, sometimes with the FAs. That goes for layovers all over the World, not only Europe.

Good luck with your Great Lakes interview.

General Lee, I flew Europe for four years out of JFK and lemme tell you... it sucked ballz. North Atlantic clearance hassles, constantly jet lagged, always tired, getting in at 1am body time and enduring a 2 hour ride from CDG to downtown Paris, waiting another hour for the room, taking a 2hr nap, waking up feeling like a zombie, not being able to sleep well that night, waking up at 2am body time for an 8hr + flt back... yeah, great, where do I sign up.

I since switched to strictly Caribbean flying out of MIA. 757 flying in and out of the islands, all daytime, no all nighters/time zone changes. Listen to the lyrics of "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere"... that's me. ;)

To all you others wondering about the "glamour" of Europe flying - trust me, it ain't what it's cracked up to be.

Let me beat him to it
"well, we have that here too. I could do that but I don't. We have all types of flying at Delta. What ever floats your boat.. we have at Delta. Delta Delta Delta. RJ's suck. I rule."

Yours truly, GL

I hope this is your version of sarcasm because if you are enjoying eating the food on the airplane that much on an international trip of any kind it is a waste for you. Anybody with any taste at all is waiting till the destination .

Well, that depends where you live, and who you fly for. The 765 at DL (767-400) is fairly junior (some 2007 hires have lines) have 6 day trips to LHR, onto DTW or MSP, and then back through LHR to JFK. Those are worth about 35 hours, and you can try to add a Moscow, Venice, Milan, or Sao Paulo to bring up your hours if you want to. Sounds like your airline didn't offer multiple day trips longer than 3 days, or you commuted to 3 day low time trips.

If you only do short Europe trips from JFK, then you may be right, lots of trips per month. If you do them from somewhere farther than JFK, like ATL, most are late afternoon sign ins, 9-10 hour flights over, morning arrival, and then 24 plus hour layover leading to a 10-11 hour flight back. Sounds like you just had a bad experience at a disgruntled airline. Base changes or aircraft changes can solve that. If you live in the NE at DL, there are plenty of choices and bases. You moving to MIA shows you made a change for the better. Good for you, but not every airline has the same trips---and you neglected to mention that. Your trips sucked because your airline had them, and you stayed there for 4 years. That was your decision. Another pilot might have taken your spot and loves it.

Uhhhhhhhh, does it beat domestic flying food? Sure it does, you only get meals domestically if the flight is blocked over 5 1/2 hours, right? (Transcons). Were you just trying to be funny? Didn't work. I enjoy the food at destination more (read my original post, stating everyone had favorite restaurants). But, there are differences between Dom and INTL flying, and complete meals is an example. Thanks for your comment Mr. Iron Chef!

Your signature is insincere I will suspect.

Hey, I said it nicely. It's just true, I don't love you. Nope. Sorry.
