Southwest Airlines plans new fees to aid revenue in 2013 - Southwest Airlines, known for its popular "bags fly free" policy, said it will implement new travel fees next year as part of a plan to increase revenue by $1.1 billion.

The company told investors on Friday that it will raise fees on third bags and overweight baggage, increase fees for flights on AirTran, the carrier it bought last year, and roll out new fees tied to the sale of open and premium boarding positions at airport gates. The company also said it would implement a no-show fee for restricted tickets that are not canceled by passengers prior to departure.

"This should add ancillary revenue and promote customer behavior that allows us to re-sell the open seat prior to departure," Southwest Chief Commercial Officer Bob Jordan said of the no-show fee during the investor meeting, which was webcast.

Southwest, which has a "bags fly free" policy under which there is no charge for a first and second checked bag, said the fee changes were expected to contribute about $100 million to revenue next year.

Of the $1.1 billion in revenue gains it expects next year, $300 million would come from the new fees and other moves related to improving operations, the Dallas-based carrier said.

The traditional discount leader, Southwest is now finding it must work harder to stay profitable in the face of labor and fuel cost pressures and rising competition.

Southwest has stressed a need to cut expenses to compete better with rivals that have restructured. Last year's Chapter 11 filing by AMR Corp's American Airlines leaves Southwest as the only major U.S. carrier that has not reorganized in bankruptcy.

Southwest's cost advantage compared with rivals "is not as great as it was in the year 2000 but is still very significant," Chief Executive Gary Kelly said."This is critical for our past success and of course critical for our future, to maintain our cost advantage," Kelly said.

Shares of Southwest were up 1.8 percent to $10.32 in Friday trading.

Where is that portly SWA Captain in those "People's Court" commercials? He is probably huffing and puffing, running between gates during his 25 min turns. Someone that old should be enjoying his later years of flying by doing one leg a day to Hawaii, or somewhere interesting like Sydney. Oh well....

as some one who in the past selected Southwest largely due to no nickel and dime, and their "Business Select" value... I think that's a big mistake.

Great, another 5 page thread is about to start with nothing but GL bashing SWA on every other post.

GL we all get it. DL is operating much better than WN right now by almost every measure and your payrates will soon be better than WNs. As a result I think a large number of FL/WN pilots, especially those under 40, will try and mirgrate to DL once you are hiring again. Lack of ancillary revenue and Bags Fly Free have hurt WN, not helped. The People's Court commercial was an epic fail. DL got most of FLs assests and all WN got out of the deal was a large number of disgruntled employees. Did I miss anything?

And

I have a domestic pairing with 5 legs each day on consecutive days on my board with an OK overnight. Also I know a couple of guys who left DL for WN during the bankrutcy that now say that it was the worst decision they ever made and they kick themselves daily for it. Is that a BIG enough win for you GL? Does that run up the score enough?

And yet more examples of why aviation is not viewed as a true profession. Just take :30 minutes to read some of the stuff on FI.com... "My airline is better than your airline!" Or "Haha your stuck in that plane...ewwww."

I wonder if Doctors at the Mayo Clinic are in turf wars with Doctors at John Hopkins?

Or if lawyers write, under anonymous names, trash about lawyers at another firm.... Probably not, they are all hanging out after work at some bar in Manhattan.

Ghetto,

Each airline is different. SWA is still a good airline. I just HATED those dumb "People's Court" TV commercials, and this is my response. We all know ancillary revenue has to rise for everyone to compete and profit. SWA used to profit with the fuel hedge advantage. Now fees will become more commonplace.

VERY well put... It's the same as when I see guys wearing tattered uniforms, no hat (yes, it's what the public thinks a well paid pilot should look like), and worn out scuffed shoes.. If you want to get paid $250,000/year .. look and ACT the part.

The Hat, if worn properly, should never be worn indoors. Running up 16,000 posts on a forum, primarily whining like a schoolgirl most of the time, also does not look or ACT the part.

Bye Bye---General Lee

Thanks for the gate info Lee. I will log 1.3 hours today with a 5 hour duty day and earn over 1500 bucks flying to AMA today. Not only did I have breakfast with my kids (who I will hold a bit tighter this evening) this morning before school, I will have dinner with them also. The FO I am flying with is only earning 1000 bucks for the same. I will buy him and the crew coffee and with our family like spirit that five hours will only seem like a social hour.

Moral of the story Mr. Lee, to each their own. I love my life and you spend a good part of yours making certain that everybody is convinced that you love your life more than others and I am sincerely happy you do. Our world looks like it would have larger problems if you didn't.

Please give this a rest. Pretty please!!!

No sh!t. I know its okay to like your company, but dammit man. Sounds like he would make love to mother D if he could.

isn't that the truth!

Great, you get to go to AMA for $1500. I did an awesome troop charter to Germany that had me dead head in First Class over, get a nice hotel, take troops somewhere I can't tell you, dead head back to Germany, and then another DH home, all for about $4500. Yeah, one leg, two great layovers with great German food and beer, and three first class dead heads. It was awesome, and it sure beat AMA, guaranteed!

I know you guys have a good deal, and you are paid well. My point mainly is that your group in general still doesn't treat the AT guys well, the pay disparity is ridiculous, and SWAPA should do something about that.

The reason I posted this thread is because of that fat Captain on those commercials, and how he used that line "We would NEVER do that." Well, never say never, right? This industry is changing fast, and just when you think your airline has a good thing going, things can change.

No, that's not the case. I just like to point out the differnces between airlines, since most of them think that we would all LUV to do exactly what they do. The high pay is nice, but multiple leg days for 30 years, nah. It's good to have variety when flying. But tell them that, and you get an eye full on the screen. It's humorous.

He's in Lubbock eating TexMex. You know you want some...;)

It's easy to get a rise out of the Corndogs

The question many have on this board is Why do you have this over powering need inside to try and annoy some people? What kind of satisfaction do you get by taking precious moments out of your life to do something so useless to anyone? Why do you live to act like this? Why do you lower yourself to such a low level? Do you ever read what you say and regret it after the fact? Some People absolutely loath you on this board. Why doesn't that bother you? Do you think that hiding behind a mask protects your character? Do you really think you are doing anything constructive with such embarrassing behavior? Would your family really be proud of your words on this forum? And actions?

Mine certainly wouldn't.

This is disingenuous at best.

There at least a dozen other issues going on with different companies that should largely concern you more about our industry that are actively on this forum that you leave completely alone.

You have a grudge and this is the only way you can cope with this inner turmoil. What I find really sad, and I am serious about this, this hatred is affecting you so much more than anyone else and you don't even know what you are doing to yourself.

Well said. I know we poke fun at eachother but after today's events arguing whose airline is better is kinda pointless.

you've got two totally separate points in that sentence, I'll address the one aimed at my response. Wearing your hat in the terminal, in the sight of your passengers is a tradition that goes back long before you ever crawled into your first trainer... In the military, your cover is always on outdoors, but also indoors if you're in a large open air space.. i.e. an airport.

I don't even want to think about that... I want to put my head in the ground like an Ostrich... how do you even begin to rationalize something like that?

Prayers are with those poor parents of those little kids... that killer has a special reservation in the 9th ring of hell.

Amen. I've got 5 kids. I don't even want to watch the news. I can't imagine the pain.

So, I can't point out an injustice? Really, the AT guys initially thought they won the lottery. A merger with SWA, what a GREAT DEAL. We all thought that. Instead, they were ganged up upon, and then seemingly punished for NOT taking the first deal. Even Scoreboard said they deserved what they got because they turned down the first deal. Well, will SWAPA take the first deal when upcoming negotiations take place for your next contract? I doubt it. Where was SWAPA when that second deal took place? I know they didn't represent them (ALPA did), but why would SWAPA allow 2 pay scales and two different groups for 4 years? (until 2015) That doesn't seem right. Does it to you?

You know man it sucks. I hate to lose. But thats part of life. Some times you win and sometimes you lose. I'll be sure to teach my daughter that. There is a reason why you don't see that many AT pilots bitching up a storm anymore. It's not that our feelings changed suddenly, it's that it is unhealthy not to let stressful things go. So thanks for being in our corner, but if you really consider yourself a part of the the FI community, just let it go. Thankfully your airline has made some good decisions lately and your career is looking up. I have many friends at DAL and i'm extremely happy for them. For SWA and AT there are bigger fish to fry. Probably as an industry as a whole. When the new ATL domicile opens for SWA, they will share our crewroom in ATL. I hope that instead of some melee breaking out, we are able to move forward as a company.
