I remember looking at the pre 9/11 pay scales for pilots and thought the major airlines were a golden road to life.

Why is it that I make the same money flying around in a private jet as a 12 year A330 CA at US Airways? There is something wrong with this. And even with Delta's new contract, I make about 10% less for the same years of service (but I get free health care, which may even out the pay).

Why is it that FO pay at the US Airways is the same as PIC pay at some regionals? The majors are supposed to be a step up.

I would love to fly for a major and not clean rich kid's snot from their fine leather chair but I can't afford it. I would be financially ruined. I guess I might have to continue being someones "hired help".

Actually the real question is: Why is life so bad at regionals that people will take a 60% pay cut and go to the worst airline in the USA?
Not to mention the drop in seniority, vacation, etc.....

Because a regional can be here today and gone the next. Look at comair. It is contract work. Any contractor can be replace by another. It is not just an airline thing.

Well I agree with the everyone that the current US Airways book has some low rates. But we all know Airways has been working under a bankruptcy contract for years now. The proposed pay increase brings them up near Delta. Plus the if the merger with American happens (which looks pretty certain now) then you can expect more.

People complaining about the current book can't see the forest for the trees. The rates will increase and get better much like everything else.

Let's all have this conversation in 5 years and see what happens.

People don't understand this industry yet and it's cycles. No one wanted to work for swa and FedEx but now look. Now is the time to get on at usair because they have been rock bottom and it s their turn to rise with American. The combined airline will Retire 1000 pilots a year for about 5 years in the future

Agree 100% that today's "choice" place to be means nothing considering the length of a typical career (20+ years).

I think any choice in the industry is a crap shoot and I don't begrudge anyone choosing to stay or leave their current job. Only you know what's best for you and your family.

USAir? Could be great......retirements galore.....Could be bad....United/DL/SWA squash them.....Ya never know!

He might be. Most of the USAir East wheenies will be gone within the next 5-7 years, and AA has a ton of old guys too, in both the left and right seats. The eventual winners will be the younger America West pilots, and new hires.

Because it's a regional. Outsourced feed! Your liveliness is at the mercy of the mainline partner. Take the plunge early, don't be the next Comair. There is no future long term career at a regional. Get out while you can.

I disagree. Same thing was said about the other two large mergers, and that didn't happen. There are tons of retirements coming for both airlines too. (AA and US)

You'd think the unions would be smart enough to have a no furlough clause in the agreements. Although, AMR still has 1,685 pilots on furlough.... No bueno.

Not true. If you've looked at the two route maps side by side you would see that there is virtually no overlap. I would see a hiring freeze at worst until the dust settles a bit. The newly combined airline has around 350 retirements a year on average for years to come.

Are you kidding me? FO pay at US Airways on the E190 is pretty much in the same ballpark as FO pay at my regional. Not even close to PIC regional pay. It's sadder than you thought!

So, I guess the moral of the story being, if it was any lower, your regional would be doing it.....

If a merger would occur, things would come together quickly for the USAir pilots. I would think the NIC award would be implemented, a joint contract with higher payrates would be signed, and then an SLI with arbitrators for the total seniority list (with the East guys "promising" to abide by it this time, wink wink). I believe the AA guys who made a side deal with Parker agreed to a 7 year fence on equipment or bases (?), so after everyone gets a pay raise it is a waiting game until those 7 years are up. But, the US Domestic and INTL flying is not too bad. Eventually there would be HUGE upward movement as the East pilots go away and the large chunk of older AA Captains and FOs. 10 years from now junior newhires would be doing very well IMO. And there would be just 3 big legacies, probably doing better financially thanks to the lack of competition. Also, it seems it can ONLY GET BETTER over there.

350 is just Us Air alone, combined its almost 1000 a year.
