honestly, If I could... I would. Family wouldn't want to move to the UAE but I've heard from a lot of people I formerly worked with that they like it over there... others are getting burned out depending on the aircraft. Those flying the A330 are working harder and have shorter legs/less rest. The 777/larger aircraft are doing longer legs which require more rest and are sometimes happier doing that. If you are an open minded person and respectful, you'll do well out there and will be treated equally... however if you're a loud-mouthed "typical American", you won't fare so well. Honestly I sometimes wish I could work somewhere without a union

I ended up having to bring my family out for a vacation to check the place out. They ended up liking it, so I got lucky. It helped I had a college friend working here that was able to show us around and take us to malls, grocery store, sites, the beach, quad biking on the sand dunes etc.

You would do well to tell them that in the interview. I had the opportunity to interview a while ago and turned it down for this very reason- no union. Your "contract" isn't worth the TP it's written on. Due dillegence is huge when contemplating a move like that. Don't be fooled- read pprune and see that there is nary a positive thread on the place. Sure, that's where the whingers hang out, but you'd better listen to what they have to say. Believe it when everyone says he big-jet glory wears off quickly and what you're left with concerning off days and vacation isnt much. Non-reving? yeah, check into that too.

You obviously just read the part of my post that you wanted to... I'm not applying, that lifestyle doesn't work for my family... any other advice you care to offer me?

Might I point out that US carriers contracts are not worth the TP they are written on either. That was evident in the bankruptcy aftermath. Granted, there are more hassles and steps to go through to change your union contracts. Ours are changed when it is necessary for the company to adjust for financial reasons. With that said, this company is well aware that they will not be able to staff this airline if they change terms and decrease the package offered. People here are mobile and willing to move, unlike most who are employed at US carriers who are tied to their cities for whatever reason.

Yes, please be informed, you would be stupid to come here without doing the research and taking the time to know what you are jumping into. Notice when you read PPRUNE that the same group of 10 people post all the negative stuff and make 90% of the postings on EK.

I have already made my points about vac and days off in the first response. In regards to non-reving, you have the option to purchase a reduced rate standby ticket or a higher rate confirmed ticket. In the US for pass benefits, I paid $200 for one airline or $400 per year for both airlines my airline flew for and paid international airport fees and taxes on top of that.

For the amount I travel, I prefer the Emirates system of giving me 1 free confirmed RT ticket per year for me and my family along with their reduced rate travel plan. For example: DXB-IAH tickets standby are $69 and firm are $282 coach upgradeable to business. If you want strictly business class tickets then standby are $183 and firm are $610. You have more options here even though you are paying a small amount. I would much rather have these benefits that I can actually use than the ones I had back in the US where peoples parents and the airlines retired pilots were filling the planes up before I got on making my pass benefits useless.

I know an ex-mil guy who just quite emirates to come home. He was single and didn't have a job lined up back in the states, he just got that sick of it.

I wouldn't want to take my family over there (been to ME enough to know).

Is this an open house? or do i need to register if I would like to go? I've only been to one open house, at jetblue. Suit and Tie? Anything else I should bring?

Open House....just show up....I would wear a suit and tie. You will be meeting those who will possibly be interviewing you. Bring your flight times. Also, if you have filled out the online application at www.emiratesgroupcareers.com, bring your application number. Resumes are not necessary as you will fill out an expression of interest form but you can bring them if you like.

It would be a good opportunity to explore but only if you have time above 30 tons.
that rule is still in effect.

I've been to two Emirates open houses, but alas I don't fly an a/c over 30 tonnes and am deemed unworthy ;-) No call......and I'm closing in on 7000TT with 3000 TPIC.
