That is probably 2+ years at poverty wages for most. On top of college and flight training, THAT IS EXPENSIVE!!! (unless mommy and daddy paid for it!)

I made better money as a 'CFI' than I did my first year at the regional airline...in fact, I made better money as a 'CFI' than 2nd year pay at ASA.

If you can't make money as a CFI its because you're not doing it right.

It's a pretty tough Bill and there's no question that it will make it very difficult and extremely expensive for a young pilot to meet the requirements for air carrier employment.

It is left to be seen what, if anything, this will do to enhance safety.

I do like the fact that were going to get a serious review of the flt time/duty time rules but there's no telling what will come out at the end.

We'll see who likes it when you wind up being told that you can't commute. That one will likely cause an unprecedented upheaval of the industry unless they find ways around it.

...or maybe enhance our pay?

I made double the money flight instructing while I was furloughed than I did at ASA. Going from being a CFI to an FO at a regional is like taking a pay cut. Of course airline pay increases every year and instructing doesn't so we make the jump.

That's great for you! There are many peeps that are able to make a living as a CFI; some in 141 programs, college programs and at busy flight schools. Not everyone lands those jobs. That is why I said "MOST" in my post. As the barriers of entry increase, the number of students decrease, making the good CFI jobs even more scarce. It a downward spiral controlled by economics, and hopefully compensation will increase for all.

That depends. If students are scarce and CFIs are plentiful it can be quite difficult to make money, especially if you are stuck at the bottom of a 141 program's seniority list with not enough students to go around.

BTW, i just read that bill as it stands... guess they did make it an ATP after all and I will be interested to see how they modify the 14CFR61 ATP requirements to allow for hours credited for advance classes. All I can remember is in the two aviation classes I took as an elective at my school (it was an elective because I didn't get an aviation/pro flight degree), I think everyone got an A and it was a waist of time. Just my two cents that a classroom is no substitute for a wing and a prayer.

No more 300 hour wonders, sounds good to me.

Hmm...when was the last time you instructed?

Last time I checked there weren't as many 17 year olds with mommy and daddy's money looking for a fast track to an RJ.

Nobody NEEDS to fly so, at least out here in LA, everyone's struggling. Back in 2007 yes...I would have made a KILLING here...but now? Not so much man.

I'm going to laugh when I see some 1500 hour kid in the sim crying cuz he can't land an RJ. But but but they told me 1500 hours would make me good. Anybody up for 4 hour work days? Instead of 15???? FAA!
