Just a heads up.....the FAA is about to have a massive turnover in their "flight check" pilot force and will be hiring at least 5 pilots in the next 6 - 9 months. I just got the call and will start in June.
Bases are: Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Sacramento, Battle Creek, Atlantic City and Anchorage.
You start out as a GS-13 while in ASIP upgrade training (Aerospace System Inspection Pilot). It takes about 12-18 months to earn your ASIP card. After earning your ASIP card, you are promoted to GS-14.
Next year looks promising as well with another 5-7 new hires expected.

I think they are using Lear 60's and King Air's for flight checks. But maybe other types.

Aircraft types:
Anchorage, Battle Creek, Atlanta = King Air 300's ONLY, Domestic Only
Sacramento, Atlantic City = King Air 300's, Lear 60's, Domestic Only
Oklahoma City = King Air 300's, Lear 60's, Challenger 601's, Challenger 604's (next year 2 new Challenger 605's) Domestic and International.

QOL: Domestic trips leave Tuesday, come back Friday. Typically fly either 2 or 3 weeks a month. Weekends/holidays off. Since you are in Civil Service, you show at 0730 and are done at 1600. On the downside, the weeks you are not flying you still need to come in and work your 40 hours at the office (usually doing your flight inspection reports, etc).
International trips are gone for 18 days straight. Usually you will do about 5 or 6 a year total.
Pilots either fly domestic or international - not both. 500 hours a year is typical.

I think the term massive for 5 pilot positions might be a bit overstated!

"massive turnover" not "massive hiring"..... but I see your point. :laugh: Hiring 5 more pilots this year and up to 7 pilots next year is pretty "massive" considering they only have around 50 line pilots total doing flight check. I'm not good at public math but I think that's about a 24% turnover.....

LOL. I wonder how many pilots who believe that actually have the yams to mail the FAA a letter complaining about it.

As most of us already know, the FAA is over 90% old white guys. One day I hope to be one of them.
