The half time line LOA has been signed and the company has publicly committed to offering half time lines for August. I do think they will be bid for, so we'll see what happens.

A buddy was hired as a street capt. in Jan 08. How will this affect him?
Displaced to First Officer...and then will be a long time FO when things pick up again. Most of the street captains are around the 950 senority number. Most Junior Captains are around 600. So that means when things pick up again, there will be 300 eager FO's ahead in line for upgrade. The whole thing sucks.

I was hoping that seven will be affected.... ..

I wonder if this is the big growth he was talking about:

I'll preface this by saying that press releases/sources to follow shortly. i.e "speculation" for now.;)

200 new hires before the end of 2008
500 new hires before the end of 2009

Mesaba will receive their first 2 CRJ-900's to be operated as Delta Connection in February. We will then receive 2 a month until we have not less than 15 being operated for DCI. Management is expecting NWA to use the options they have for the CRJ-900's to give to Mesaba.
6 of the 900's we are rumored to receive will be operated by Pinnacle until the software issue is resolved that will allow Delta's software to integrate with Mesaba's (apparently the reason crewtrac crashed a few months ago)
Also, the American Eagle rumor is again surfacing. Training Department being told to hire at least 2-3 more instructors for the Saab, as Mesaba is looking to get at least some of American Eagle's SF340's.

All new airplanes to be operated out of ATL. The new ATL base to be as large as the DTW base ASAP.
The New Premier Regional Carrier for the New Delta.

I feel real bad about this. I have a couple of Mesaba guys in my crash pad, and this will be there 2nd furlough in a year. :(

The stuff that was posted was true based on the 900's we were told we would be recieving from DAL. But they quickly pulled the plug on that. This coupled with the Saab reduction is the reason for the furlough.
It goes to show that anything can happen. I was right at the time. But DAL changed their minds. The result: All the pilots we hired in preparation for the 15 900 deliveries are being layed off now. Our own management has no idea what DAL is doing. We are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

Considering they found out after some of us that came across that newspaper article about it. Heck if someone didn't email it to the CP and it get passed up the line they still might not know anything. It seems the difference between the NWA and Delta way is at NWA they preplanned everything out well in advance WITH the top managers at the regionals. At Delta they tell NOBODY of the plans and just dump the results in your lap. Either way it's a steaming pile but at least with NWA you saw it coming and could try to move.

For everyone else in the regional world...watch out for mergers. The only reason there are so many regional airlines and regional jobs is competition between the major carriers. Each major wanted a handful of regionals to play with. As the number of major airlines decreases, so will the number and size of regional airlines. Just look out your window when you taxi. See that Mesa 50 seater going to the same city you are in your 70 seater? When the two companies painted on the tail merge, those 120 seats of revenue can be combined into one comfy Airbus or 737.

The major airlines were begging for mergers last year when oil was up. Well, oil is at it again, and the federal government would love to "save" our industry without throwing more unpopular bailout money around. I would say expedited approvals for mergers are in our future, which does not bode well for any regional pilot. Each major will still contract with mulitple regional airlines, but the size of the regional fleets will not grow in the combination.

Sorry, mesaba guys. I hope you find some way to carry on in the near term and long term. I am sure more of us will be joining you before recalls happen.
