AirTran to disclose 11 new departures on Tuesday

AirTran Holdings Inc. (AAI) will announce details Tuesday of its plans to add 11 more daily departures from Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport, the company said today.
AirTran's current schedule has 19 daily departures from Milwaukee to nine cities. The increase to 30 daily departures will come this summer, during the peak travel season.
Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran considers Milwaukee one of its strongest potential growth markets, in part because of last fall's 40% national schedule cutback by Oak Creek-based Midwest Airlines Inc.
Midwest is still Mitchell's largest carrier, flying 93 daily departures to 29 cities. But Midwest's market share at Mitchell, for many years at around 50%, was at 38% in December. AirTran, the No. 3 carrier at Mitchell, had 18% share.
AirTran on Tuesday also will announce a job fair for new Milwaukee positions, and a new partnership with YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee.




Doesn't say anything about new cities but 11 departures is still a fairly big jump for MKE so I would assume there will be at least 1 new city pair announced.

Some of our pilots say SWA has tv ad running in Milwaukee area. With the demise of Midwest, and Airtran beefing up flights, I think this would be a move SWA would look at. There was the rumor here of another city announcement in 2009....any bets?

Hmmmm TV Commercial in the Milwaukee area? Do realize how close Milwaukee is to Chicago? Were you watching WGN? My grandma in Menominee falls can pick up WGN with her rabbit ears. But seriously, I don't think SWA wants to pull from there own hub and compete with themselves. They are too smart for that. But luv had better watch out for the tranny with gas at next to nothing and all their hedges cleared out they will be a force to reckon with. I can see some flights from milwaukee to mcw though.

Don't laugh, Mason City is on the rise. There local economy is booming and pretty much all the airlines will be competing for gate space/market share. Expect a major hub to develope by one of the majors, and yes, lots of traffic from MKE to/thru MCW.

Do a google on MCW and you will begin to realize the economic impact that it has on a global scale.

Of course you meant Mason City, the sprawling metropolis of 30,000 covering an impressive 26 square miles.

Mason City is a city in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. The population was 29,172 at the 2000 census (2005 estimate 27,909) and has stayed close to 30,000 since 1995.

Mason City has a total area of 26.2 square miles (67.8 km²), of which, 25.8 square miles (66.8 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (1.45%) is water.

I see the chance of Southwest coming to MKE at about 0%. MDW is too close. Probably just a couple new summer destinations and an increase in frequency to a few existing cities.

AirTran to add nonstop flights to St. Louis, Minneapolis, Denver, Branson, Mo.

AirTran Airways will add St. Louis, Minneapolis, Denver and Branson, Mo., to its list of nonstop destinations from Milwaukee as part of its local service expansion, the carrier announced today.
Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran has never flown to those cities from Mitchell International Airport, and will begin service to those destinations in May.
Airlines typically add flights and destinations during peak summer travel periods. AirTran said it will maintain service to St. Louis, Minneapolis and Branson year-around, but will end seasonal service to Denver on Sept. 8.
In addition to the new routes, AirTran will convert three destinations that are now seasonal - Los Angeles, Boston and Tampa, Fla. - to year-round service. Flights to Los Angeles will return on April 14, service to Boston will return May 21, and winter seasonal service to Tampa will be maintained year-round.
In addition, summer seasonal service to both San Francisco and Seattle will be extended to Oct. 30, and could be added to the roster of year-around flights in the future.
As a result, AirTran will offer 30 daily departures from Milwaukee this summer, up from 21 departures in summer 2008. The number of seats available per week on departing flights will grow 39% year over year. The airline will offer nonstop service to 18 destinations from Milwaukee, an increase from 14 destinations last summer.

Midwest made deep schedule cuts and outsourced much of its operations to save money as fuel prices spiked in 2008 and the recession later sapped demand for travel.
In December, Midwest's market share at Mitchell, which for several years was at or above 50%, stood at 38%, according to airport data. AirTran's market share was about 18% in December. Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL), through its recent purchase of Northwest Airlines Corp., had market share of around 24%.
AirTran's corporate parent, AirTran Holdings Inc. (AAI), mounted a hostile take over attempt of Midwest that failed in 2007 when AirTran was outbid by TPG Capital and Northwest Airlines.

LOL...maybe not for the pilots....but the flight attendants????? They have virtual bases in MCO, TPA, and Atlanta now. I imagine MKE and BWI will soon be on their list. It should be an interesting summer in MKE. I wonder if the 717 will get a couple of runs from MKE to Denver this summer.

It is good to see that SEA, SFO may become year round destinations out of MKE. I think that is very important for the business traveler. I agree connecting the northeast cities with the west coast cities without having to go through Atlanta is important. I imagine if things workout with these cities, perhaps the Texas cities of DFW, HOU, and SAT may find dots to MKE down the road as well.
