Here is he deal.

A pilot for our company was jumpseating and I guess he saw some snow on the wing. This pilot did not let the captain know that he had concerns. Maybe the capt never saw the snow, I don’t know. Then this jumpseater, same company, went home wrote a letter to management saying the captain did not deice, thus resulting in firing of the Captain. Jumpseater in my opinion who was a captain should of said something to the flying captain if he was that worried. Not go an rat out to mgt. later. How should we treat this fellow pilot in the company I mean that goes against all Pilot Code

What would you do?

If true, the guy sounds like scum. The fact that he didn't speak up when he noticed a safety of flight issue should get HIM fired.

I suppose I would watch my back around that guy. Nothing else you can really do.

no it was the captain that was flying that got fired. the captain that jumpseated, then told management was never called to the meeting which he should of been in my opinion. Yea i know just thought pilots, no matter how much we give each other sh**, still we have to support each other

sorry i miss read your post yea my feelings are that as well if you see a safety of flght issue at least say something to the captain in charge of the flight

Yeah I was saying it was the jumpseater that was scum, and that HE should have gotten the boot for not speaking up.

There is something fishy about this story though... It seems strange that someone would get canned based on a single source report. Not knowing the people involved, it seems a bit wierd to me.

Ensure that everyone at your company is made privy to this imbecile. If he were concerned for his own safety, he'd have said something or walked off. How can you have such a valid concern if you're still comfortable with JSing? Sounds to me like he had it in for the captain or the captain was already on the companies radar for termination.

Let's have his initials and company...if you're 100% certain (and i do mean 100%) that he did what you say, he deserves to be outed.

Nowadays, you always need to get sprayed off if there's even the slightest hint of contamination sticking, you never know who's back there in an over-wing window seat...fed, management, private pilot with cam, or a rat-bastard jumpseater.

I don't buy the story.

An unsubstantiated report leading to termination sounds like a wet dream for a trial lawyer!

Ok for the sake of arguement had this JS said something to the CA and he got blown off which followed by a call to mgt would he still be scum?

Not buying it either.

Dude is siting there thinking "Gee, sure hope we make it!". then he "makes it", and tells the boss? Uh uh.

Sounds like a flame 2 me....why would the captain knowingly let the aircraft fly and risk lives doing so....

flame....

this is bs, jumpseater, has the DUTY to inform the crew of any situation deemed unsafe, if they dont they are just as guilty.... flame thread... NO WAY DID THIS OCCUR... reasons are many, here's one: PAY, we get paid when we get pushed back..... two: just b/c johnny jumpseater says one thing about captain deice to the CP, cpt deice will NEVER get fired...

Yeah...I totally don't believe that one at all. I know airlines are terminate-crazy but thats a bit much right there.

I don't doubt it could happen. I believe there was something similar that happened at my company, although it was awhile ago and the details are fuzzy

Also, I remember one time I sat beside a Canadian FAA equivalent on a deadhead (UAX carrier, not Mesa or RAH). There was a little bit of snow above the main cabin door and he told me that if it were a Canadian carrier, the crew would have been violated. Didn't stop him from flying on it though, so apparently he didn't think there was a safety issue. Some people just live to be pricks.

If the original post dictates the facts, the deadheader should have a magnifying glass on him. Because he WILL screw up at some point. What goes around comes around. We have enough to worry about without rats in our ranks.

I find this story hard to believe. How could the Captain get fired on what a jumpseater said. So anyone could just say a crewmeber did something wrong and they get fired? What proof was there that they took off with snow on the aircraft other then the word of the jumpseater? Was it actually snowing at the time? There has to be more to this story. Is this a union carrier? What did the union do for this Captain.

I just thought about this but what if this was the straw that broke the camel's back?

Not that I believe the story at all...just another angle...

I would have told management, and then I would have called his parents.

I don't believe this story, (I'm sorry). I've seen pilots turn in others for diferent reasons (execpt drinking), I've never seen a guy get fired over something somelse said, NEVER.

1- Management fired someone over not de-icing?? BS

2-Management believed the jumpsitter entirely, and fired this guy?? yeah right

The story as it was told CANNOT BE. Something is missing, or its BS.....

An employee terminated due to a failure to follow company procedure, even if the circumstances are in question, is an easy way for a company trying to cut costs to reduce their work force.

When times are good and airlines are short, pilots can get away with damn near anything and not lose their job. When times are tough and airlines are fat of flight crews, people get let go for some pretty stupid sh!t.

I also can't help but think there was no union involved at this company.

(FWIW, I heard about something similar to this happening at Skywest recently, but the story I heard didn't involve a termination of any crewmembers)

If you are a jumpseater you are REQUIRED CREW and have a responsibility to speak up. Said jumpseater could easily have the FAA on his six.

I'm just sayin'.

Gup

I'm pretty sure that the flame would have melted the ice.

You need to make sure everyone knows this story. You should be posting his name on the internet. He earned the right to be black balled.
