At Mesaba there are 235 pilots with 10+ years of seniority. Most of whom, apparently, have a history of violations.

Most don't have to stay in the regionals beyond 10 years. Once you get someone who's been there longer than that...there's either a history of violations or other family issues. On occassion you find someone who just wants to stay- but that is rare.

Simply the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I have flown with MANY 20+ year pilots at ASA. Most were tremendous pilots. I'm sure the VAST majority have no violations or DUI's, etc.

Many were caught at the furlough times in the late 90's as 8-10 yr pilots. When the hiring started back, they were now near 15 years and it made no sense to start over at a Major. If they would have taken that leap, most, if not all, would have been furloughed once or twice more.

Not really, I have a lot of senior captains that told me that they would love to move on but can't risk it and can't afford the paycut because they got to support their family.

And don't forget for some this is a second career.

Maybe, they sold out their internet company in 1999. After being bored, they went to regional and are content as a Sr CA with the ability to drop 1/2 their schedule. This job isn't half bad if you get to work as much/little as you want and money isn't an issue.

I know many of those 10+ year guys and very, very few have violations. Family issues? Not sure what that means, but if an individual puts his family first and figures he will have better quality of life at a smaller airline and living where he wants to live, then so be it!

And if it's your goal to leave, then the result is, there are less pilots applying for your dream job. You should be happy!

My point was that the vast majority of pilots at regionals don't make it to 10 years. Eagle and Horizon are a bit off of the norm due to ultra long upgrade times. They have their reasons for staying- some be it unhireable or some have other reasons (family and living in base as has been mentioned).

I figured the ultradefensive would jump on it- but my statement was primarily the truth.

That may have been the truth 10 years ago but in the post-9/11, post-bankruptcy, crappy economy world that we have seen over the last several years, that statement is an overgeneralization. Just because you made it out of a regional in under 10 years doesn't mean everyone can or will.

Someone stays longer than 10 years so it has to be because he has "violations" or "family issues"? Why don't you just say, "F/O's are starving? LET THEM EAT CAKE!"

I don't consider myself "ultradefensive" either. Not everyone is willing to bail for the first major or national that is hiring. I know many 10+ year regional pilots who could have gone to United (as some did) in the past few years. Know where they would be now (or soon)? On the street.

This industry has changed. Maybe you should take a look around. Going to a major is not nearly as easy or desirable as it was 10 years ago. But what do you care? Your at one, right? So everyone else still at a regional is lazy, guilty of a crime, or can't say no to the wife, huh?

Enjoy life at the top. It will be a short stay.

Just because many others may not have had perfect timing like you, doesn't make them misfits, cowboys and losers. I'm not being ultra defensive either, but realistic.

Peanuckle.....your situation is different than many others....At your young age, you might as well make the move from from Pinnacle to Delta....

For someone much older who has experienced many downturns in the business.....It doesn't make as much sense to leave a quality regional for the bottom of a legacy in a rapidly slowing economy....

You're right that many don't make it 10 years at the regionals....However the second part of that truth is that many who left wish they hadn't when the next downturn comes.....

This is my third downturn and my career has been better each year than it was the previous.....Not everyone can say that after the 3 worst downturns in the industry....
