The BTA code came from Britt Air - a HUF-based regional. The BTA certificate is what ExpressJet originally operated under.

Better than Jetlink calling themself "Britt Air" on the radio, just because their 3-letter is BTA...

At the time it was Expressjet, operating as Continental Express, under the Britt certificate, with a jetlink call sign, owned by Continental.
 
In reality the west at the time the decision was made didn't really care. Parker handed the ops. over to the East(dumb dumb dumb) and in return had the gaul to say, "Hey don't worry the west gets to keep the call sign and Coke". It's about the only thing the West got and I'm sure they don't want to give it up. Imagine a divorce judge handing over everything to the ex except the gear shift knob from your truck. The house, the boat, the kids, all her's. What really sucks is that the ex came into the relationship with no job and bad credit. Did I mention she's ugly to boot. If you can imagine this then you can begin to understand why the Westies say, "say CACTUS bi#%^!" West=rules East=tools
 
In regards to the original post. Yes, I heard the controlers bitching about it too a couple of days ago. He was very candid about it over the air and said it really screws things up.
 
Controller in Washtington Center today told a USair flight that they had gotten some paperwork in regards to the callsign. The USair guy very enthusastically goes "they are changing it back to usair??"

Nope, apparently all flights will be filed as AWE shortly.

Both Ho Jets and Scabpublic are centralized commuter airlines that have not been around for 20+ years throughout the entire country, europe, the islands, mexico, canada, etc. Blow Jets and Shepublic only operate certain areas and have only been around for a couple years. Plus the big issue is not the callsign change, but the USA instead of AWE on the FAA flight plan strip. If we must call ourselves cactus then file us AWE. If you file us USA then we are still US Air.
