In a recent Alpa "FastRead Newsflash" email dated 6/16/08 there is a picture of union members standing around a big rat with bags of money. I am embarrassed to be a part of a union that would do that. Are we serious? We are represented by a union that is starting to ask for more money, but can scrape up the money to rent/buy this thing?

Can you imagine management doing stuff like this? Perhaps they would get lots of blow up people with pitch forks and lanterns to represent the mob mentality.

If we want to be taken seriously...oh forget it.

You're absolutely right Jonathan....There is a movement that is growing here at ASA to decertify ALPA. Atlas is voting to decertify ALPA. It is time....

The Rat thing is a little embarrasing. If ALPA wants some kind of respect from managment-lose the rodent please.

New ALPA Mascot

It's not a little embarrassing- it's hugely embarrassing! The hypocrisy of them inflating a huge rodent with bags of money is overwhelming. Given my soon-to-be-implemented, involuntary contribution increase, maybe its more of a mascot for ALPA than an attack on management.

You think management is going to give you any respect ever? Wow....one born every minute I guess.

I Doubt ALPA national is using props like giant rats, its' not a big deal either way. On the other hand to suggest getting rid of ALPA continues to astound me. Management goes out of their way to anger, inconvenience, and frustrate us taking as much from our families as they can specifically to get us to fall apart and get rid of ALPA. How will you defend yourself as an individual without ALPA? We should be moving toward a true single national union not a bunch of bitter splintered little groups.

Less than ten percent of the U.S. workforce is unionized and somehow they make it. I will defend myself the same way they do. Professional mistakes are made throughout other industries and not everyone is fired. It is not in the best interest of a company to do that.

That Rat was such a hit at ALPA NWA that pilots made up buttons with a rat and red circle/slash.

Kinda like the UAL hat switch... many don't get it....

The big inflatable rat is symbolic of the management that has cheated and stolen pay and retirements...

But if you just show up, fly your trip and go home and want to believe everything is fine... then reject the rat....

Have you been flying with Brian Wilson?

accept the fact that you are blue collar and please give up the crap about the rat being an embarrassment. what is embarrassing is the pay! the rat has been around for a long time and is widely known as the symbol of greedy management. Any union is as strong as it's members.

Wow. If only ALPA didn't come across as even more self-serving than management, I might buy what you're selling. I wonder what kind of evil plot management is working on right now to make me miserable....

Foreign Ownership
Open Skies
Greater flight time Duty time
Pay cuts- opps they already did that..
Work rule cuts- oops that too
gutted pensions- oops they did that too
Poor FMLA rules..
Indifference to TSA screening
MPL

Is that enough or do you want more?

I'll say it again, I'm astounded. I think that we as labor confuse the role and ability of a Union to affect our working lives with the well thought out frustration generated by management across the industry. ALPA does not have the ability to Stop a company like UAL from doing ugly things to it's employees. They(we) can fight as a group, but... The real value is in INDIVIDUAL protection. Shelton, does your family have an extra $25K+ to fight the company or the FAA? Mine doesn't. Most workers take whatever the company wants to do and have no recourse. ALPA isn't perfect, they are a bureaucracy, but I've seen them save numerous careers.
