Anyone want to share their policy on reading in the cockpit on long (Gulfstream/Global) flights?

every once in a while you'll fly with that one captain that micromanages and tells you not to read anything in the cockpit. Ok, fine, so I pull out the aircraft operations manual and pretend to read that, daring him in my mind to say anything. Childish, i know, but he started it!

The silliness of the "no reading unless its company related" policy, is that if you're reading a company manual or a USA Today, you're equally distracted either way.

I just download books on my crackberry and read those. If asked I tell them I am working on my log book. LOL

In the event you fly with a micromanager, no reading in my professional cockpit type make absolutely sure that he/she never ever closes their eyes and drifts off....

What, no portable dvd player or laptop? You could watch 2 or 3 movies on a 14 hr flt. The portable dvd player would fit ok on the glareshield of a G or Global.

You realize you're posting in the Corporate Forum, right? Given the time of your post I'll assume that you were drinking. You should probably head back to the Regional Forum and go play over there.

At the airlines I fully supported a little media diversion from time to time, in an effort to stay awake and sharp. Now I'm flying for an uber-rich owner of a $55M aircraft where the cockpit door is open above 10,000ft. He is NOT going to wander up front and see one or both of the pilots reading the Moscow Times or some ratty old Louis L'Amour novel. Not on my watch. Of course, we have the luxury of getting up and walking around the cabin when we need to in an effort to stay focused.

You have a point. There should never ever be company policies or SOP's, we should all be able to do what ever we want, and if anyone has a different opinion that is senior to me, we should take them out.:erm:

I never follow behind another airplane with less than 2 plane-spaces away, and I always signal when I try to get back to the middle of the localize.

If you really have flown a X, i find it hard to believe that you sit up there from TEB to LAX all that time without doing something to occupy that simple mind. Maybe you just sit there trying to remember how to spell analogy.

2dumb with regard to spelling on a message board, who cares. #2 When were at altitude if I get tired, I get out of my seat grab a drink/snack and see how everyone is doing. Look I'm not standing on a soap box and preaching my values. If my coworker sittin next to me wants to read a magazine then great. I dont have a beef with it and quite frankly none of our passengers have either.

In fact our pax are the most laid back group of people to work for. The question was raised about reading in the cockpit. I dont do it, I think its unprofessional. If you do, thats your thing.

With regard with your statement on me "really flying an X", yeah I really do fly an X, again who cares. If there's anything I can do to help validate what I fly please let me know.
