Challenger Door Loss in Flight

I just saw a flash on the news that a Challenger had the main cabin door come off in flight. They said it departed somewhere in Colorado. The pictured aircraft on the ramp in fact had no door. Anyone heard anything?

GRAND JUNCTION (AP) - Aviation officials say the main passenger door fell off a twin-jet business plane as it was taking off from Grand Junction Regional Airport, but no one was hurt.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus says the door tumbled from the Bombardier Challenger CL-60 shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday.

He didn't know how high the plane was. It returned to the airport and landed safely.

Fergus says the cause isn't known. FAA investigators are expected at the airport Tuesday.

Fergus did not know how many people were on the plane, but it can seat about 20 passengers.

The plane's registered owner is WFP Investments of Snowmass Village. No one answered the company's phone after business hours Monday.

From what I've heard, it's a (former?) Aero Toy Store airplane. The door's been recovered just northwest of the airport.

The door left the aircraft and damaged the opposite side of the fuselage with possible engine ingestion of debris. Obviously when it left the plane the airflow sucked it around the other side damaging some metal. Very interesting. Good job on the crew, not a crazy complicated emergency but still.

Were there any pax on board?

Not a 600, look at the engines.

hmmmm don't see a any probe right under cockpit window and the tail though not shown looks like it is tapered into the rudder not elongated .......... but anyway i figured maybe door not closed amd got swung up by the slipstream

I do not know anything about all of that, but I do know the 600 does not have GE engines on it. Evident by the visible tail-cone.

Well I was thinking one of my CRJ driver buds said theirs was a plug door and since it's a derivative of the Challenger...

Maybe the big CRJs..not sure, the 200 is like the Chanllengers...swing-down step door.

I believe some of the small-tube ERJs have a plug.

I just can't believe the door didn't hit anything major on the way out. Could have been REALLY bad. Reminds me of the UAL 747 in HNL. TC

It is a CL601, S/N 3013. Yes it is a very early model 601.
No, FedEx doors were never installed on the 601s, only the first 12 of the 600 models.
Not a plug-type door but a swing down door/step.
It was one of Aero Toy Store's aircraft but that was a while back.

After the aircraft rotated, they banked left and the door opened and departed the aircraft striking an antenna under the fuselage and breaking it. The door continued under the fuselage and struck the right wing. I have not seen the pics from this even, but from what was reported to me is that the wing damage is somewhat minor.

It was in GJT at Weststar for some minor maintenance (Misc lamps inop and leaking wheel assy).
I originally heard that it was in for a 300 or 600 hour insoection, but that was not why it was there.

I just look at it as if they just do not know or have not done the research.

That may be its certified occupancy limit. (not how many seats it had)

I am speaking from memory, but I think even the Beechjet was certified for 12 or 13. I once saw a CL-60 with 16 seats in the back set up for a shuttle operation.

Has there been any other issues with the door on CL-60's?

ATC's identifier for the Challenger is "CL-60". It doesn't matter if it is a 600, 601, 604, 605.

The airplane is approved for 22 pax. I have not seen one with this configuration, but this is the approved maximum.

Yeah, and a king air 200 is certified for 15. But i think they only use that config for jumpers.

With that model/serial number aircraft, it is not equipt with an ICAS system. But I can tell you this much... from the cockpit, there had to be at least two indication notifications that were canceled and/or overlooked.

(-23) ON SEPTEMBER 18, 2001, AT APPROXIMATELY 1100, SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF FROM JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT, SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA, A BOMBARDIER CHALLENGER CL-600, N50PA, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY DUE TO THE AIRCRAFT MAIN ENTRY DOOR OPENING IN FLIGHT. Mesa used to fly the King Air 200, they called it a 1300. 13 passenger seats plus the 2 pilots seats.
