Most airline pilots worldwide are losing the hat. It is just one of those things that are adjusting for the times. It has nothing to do with professionalism, and an airline pilot not wearing a hat looks just as professional as one that does. We don't wear scarves and flying gloves any more because times have changed. The hat will eventually go, too.

Waiting for my dad at JFK this year, I witnessed pilots from KLM and several other international airlines emerging from customs - all hatless, and all looking splendid. There was no confusion between crewmembers - the pilots all had the classic uniform stripes and jackets.

I really don't get all the hoopla about wearing the hat. Does it look classic, absolutely. But you guys are more concerned about how YOU look in your hat, rather than the impression you THINK it gives others around you.

It's really very simple - if you like to wear it because you think you portray a better professional, than wear it. If you don't like it, ditch it. What's all the fuss about?

Hatless at AA

...words from the mighty j32 fighter pilot...change the fag uniform you've worn since leavin that university ramp...not an aviator's coat...

Learn to write coherently. You should stop posting drunk, at 3 in the morning. My point was BLACK leather, or blazer and an overcoat.

questions...

Yes......huh????

And there is your problem. IF people would tailor their uniform, wash their shirts, and then tuck them in, not wear pants designed for wading, actually learn to tie a tie properly, etc...........nevermind.

Amen!! I wear tapered shirts (ironed), pleatless pants (dry cleaned) and I wash my stripes every six months. While my tie is a clip-on, it's always washed and looks straight with a perfect knot. I also "Brasso" my wings every three months so they are shiny and wear shiny black Justin boots. The whole presentation is of a professional clean cut airline pilot. Wearing or not wearing the hat would not affect my image at all.

Agreed. If everyone did that, the hat would be irrelevant. Unfortunately, half of our peers need all the help they can get....or maybe a good woman to dress them.

5 pages on a hat...

How about 5 pages on the next round of contract talks, where picketing should take place, and how much money you have in your strike fund?

Jeez...

I always hear this arguement about how people couldn't care less about how the pilot looks. I think that's a bad excuse. One time I was JS on SWA from BWI to CLE and I was wearing my uniform (CAL style) complete with hat. Someone who was travelling with his wife and kids made a point to come up to me and tell me how sharp I looked and that it was nice to see. I know I'll get some heckling about how some gay guy tried to pick me up, but the truth is, this guy was a normal everyday guy with kids. The point i'm making is, people notice and it really felt good that I was representing my profession well. This includes all those who hate the hat and the uniform, those with spiked frosted tipped hair, or those who walk around with unshined shoes and wader pants with the shirt untucked. BTW, the only time my hat will leave my head will be when I'm incinerated and placed in my grave at the end of a runway somewhere.

Exactly. The sad thing is, many of these anti-hat types would probably want to use negotiating leverage just to get rid of the hat. The PCL MEC received an email from a MEM Captain a couple of years ago that simply said "any TA that doesn't prohibit the company from making us wear hats will get a NO vote from me!" Absolutely ridiculous, but I guess some people care more about their gelled hair than they care about their paycheck and days off.

RM, were you here(FL) when the biggest response our Union got from its Pilots was when Mgt. said the Leather Jacket was going away? You're absolutely right, it is a shame we can't get these guys wound up about things that matter. I shudder to think what might have happened if it weren't for you and several others who took the initiative and started the atpilots.org rally.

Yeah, I was there... what a mess. All over a stupid BROWN jacket that doesn't even match the uniform...

Hopefully will be back on property for the NEXT contract, too (and hopefully it won't be necessary as it will HOPEFULLY be a contract WORTH working an entire career under).

It's amazing how a hat/jacket controversy get the pilot group all round up!!how about our election result, anyone paying attention?mike best is taking his time to keep us inform about different issues of our concern, quite a different approach from the previous team.how often do you guys log on to the NPA web site or is that FI your only favorite??!!

Wader pants?

Yes, pants of which the bottom hem rests high enough on the shin/calf so that it looks like you are prepared to go wading without getting your pants wet.
