Most airline pilots worldwide are losing the hat. It is just one of those things that are adjusting for the times. It has nothing to do with professionalism, and an airline pilot not wearing a hat looks just as professional as one that does. We don't wear scarves and flying gloves any more because times have changed. The hat will eventually go, too.
Waiting for my dad at JFK this year, I witnessed pilots from KLM and several other international airlines emerging from customs - all hatless, and all looking splendid. There was no confusion between crewmembers - the pilots all had the classic uniform stripes and jackets.
I really don't get all the hoopla about wearing the hat. Does it look classic, absolutely. But you guys are more concerned about how YOU look in your hat, rather than the impression you THINK it gives others around you.
It's really very simple - if you like to wear it because you think you portray a better professional, than wear it. If you don't like it, ditch it. What's all the fuss about?
