The next company video you receive, the next company brochure you see, the next issue of the in-flight magazine look at who is pictured representing the pilot group.

I am sure the pilots represented in any company publication shown is a minority or a woman pilot.

You will not find a young white male pictured in a company publication guaranteed.

Not true but are you somehow trying to make a point? What the F does that have to do with the subject? Is that your proof?

Simmer down. You sound like the only racist on this thread...

Deep breaths...

Q. What's the difference between Black Pilots and White Pilots?

A. Absolutely Nothing.

Why aren't we (as people) beyond this ********************?

Cheers.

I had mentors that were Tuskegee Airman that have flown in wars that wouldn't get the time of day by UAL at that point in time.

That's true. Up until the seventies. It was a disgrace.

I got no problem with actively recruiting certain folks, as long as they meet the same minimums. A thousand PIC turbine will seperate the wheat from the chaff.

But I saw some leave ASA for UAL with ~500 hours TT and zero turbine PIC. Not cool. But that was ten years ago.....

I think what we are seeing with D-Bo is an unfortunate by-product of affirmative action. Here is a totaly qualified black pilot who worked his way up and shouldn't have to answer to anyone, but the reality is is that because affirmative action has allowed some (not all) very low time, inexperienced pilots into the ranks of the majors, this "label" now sticks to all minorities, to which they spend a lifetime defending. That doesn't sound fun to me.

Yes there was a time and place for affirmative action. The cycle of excluding minorities had to be broken somehow, but I think now is the time it should be ended.

If I was a black or female pilot with the type of quals. as D-Bo, I would be pissed that others were getting hired because of their race or sex and not their experience. It tarnishes all the rest of the minorities reputations, and that shadow of doubt seems to never leave.

Get rid of affirmative action and no one can ever say you got hired for any other reason except that you were qualified for the job.

Race or sex shouldn't even be on the app.

Most of us have seen this. This is for the new guys. It's about 12 years old and a classic. Author unknown to me. Note to self....didn't work so hot for a cover letter last time around.

"I have 500 hrs and big knobby boobs and fly 747s w/ cathode ray tubes.

I may not know what Im doing or why, but I fly for the UNITED in the minority sky.

We are the pride of United fleet w/ Debbie, Tyrone, and Abdul Raheet.

In UAL ground school I flunked my exam, but it didn't matter I have a bearded clam.

I departed DEN on hot afternoon and one of the Boeings engines quit 10 knots too soon.

From the left to the right we started to swerve, but w/ my very low time, I lost my nerve.

She started to to rock and she started to roll and I knew real soon we would be a firey hole.

Then my Captain took over and stoped that big hog, he's a great pilot he was a commuter dog."

What pisses me off is the misconception that only minorities are and were hired with low time. That isn't the case. And I'm not talking about 10 or 15 years ago. I'm talking about now. For those of you out there that think that white guys got hired at United with less than 1000 hours in the 90s, you're wrong. And I'm not just talking about a handful of guys. Somehow they deserved it and somehow some of us only got hired because of our group. In case some out there don't know, black pilots at UAL only represent LESS than 1% of the entire group. 0.5% to be exact.

Look, I don't care what someone else had when they got hired. More folks on this board need to worry about themselves. That's the only thing you can control.

nothing i wrote was racist either d-bo.

i was just sharing some facts i witnessed during my own experiences. minorities, woman and pilots who's daddies are senior captains are generally inexperienced, unqualified according to the mimimum standards outlined and do not meet the minimum qualifications everyone else is required to meet.

That's true too D-Bo. I knew a couple of white male UAL interns in the 90's who got hired with about 500 hours. That pisses me off just as much.

I know most of the United interns worked their a$$es off in college to be selected for the position, including myself. I chose to attend an educational institution where I knew these opportunities would be available.

It was the top intern program back then. Getting hired with low time was one of the perks of being selected for the program. It's part of the deal, whether you approve or disapprove. That being said, no, I am not applying at United anytime in the near future.

D-Bo....don't even bother. I've been fighting this fight for a while and no matter what you say, tools like this won't accept it. They will insist that minorities and females don't have to have any qualifications to get good jobs and poor wittle whitey man never gets any good aviation job. In the meantime, his wittle whitey man a$$ is sitting on it, not networking, not going to job fairs....sometimes not even applying. But poor wittle victim whitey man has his convenient excuse....all the females and minorities are taking his job dammit! Awwww, poor wittle baby! We all feel sorry for you. Like I said, don't waste your time. No matter what you say, poor wittle baby won't ever admit you have a point....poor wittle baby will whine and cry.

Really? That's funny. Been an OBAP member since I was in High School, worked on the ramp for UAL during the one summer I took off during college, damn near graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Science with a 4.0 (finished with a 3.8), flew for the commuter airlines for over 5 years, upgraded to Capt not long after my 23rd B-day, and had a clean record and got the interview when I had about 5000 hours. Other friends I have from OBAP had more than that or spent many years in the military. As a matter of fact the 5 guys with the lowest time in my class were all white males, the lowest one having 1900 hours at the time....not that it matters to me but it obviously matters to your dumb a**. The BS is that a DA like yourself would never know what it actually took to get there cause you already got a BS misconception in your head.

If you have to blame OBAP for your inability to get a job I feel sorry for you. Look at your own merits or lack thereof....you'll find what's holding you back.

It's also a fact that once upon a time UAL not only hired folks with 0 hours but also paid for commercial tickets and other ratings. One fact, yes fact, was that you couldn't be anything other than white and a male. I had mentors that were Tuskegee Airman that have flown in wars that wouldn't get the time of day by UAL at that point in time. So, everyone here wants to talk sh** about affirmative action at UAL while ignoring the reason it got to that point in the first place. Keep blaming, poking fun, or whatever you want to call it, about OBAP. Hopefully it'll make some of you feel better about yourselves.

Amen bro! Exactly!

Once again though, don't callous your fingertips trying to reason with some of these babies.

Agreed.

I'm sure you have come across plenty of white males that were not qualified either, you just chose not to pay attention because it's automatically assumed that they are competitive. I know TONS of guys that got jobs with less time than me because I pay attention. I don't really give a crap, I am actually happy for a lot of them, I pay attention so I have ammo against ignoramuses.

I agree D-Bo. I hate when people use OBAP as an excuse. I got all the boxes filled and OBAP hasn't done a thing to help me get a job. In fact, (not that it matters one bit) but I was the highest time jet guy in my new-hire class at my current gig.

Back to Friday night fights.

Bottom line folks is United will hire whoever they want to and they will not consult you nor do they give a $hit what your opinion is and what your logbook says. If you don't like their hiring practices, then don't work there. Otherwise, you're just jealous.

And just because you say over and over that the only low-time pilots that get hired are non-white males - DOESN'T MAKE IT A FACT.

I'm sure that these strokers that are complaining about low time pilots being hired would have been fine with it if it were them that got hired. Like any of you would have turned down the job with 500tt...give me a break....stop being hypocrites...

I'm not even talking about interns. As a matter of fact, every intern that I know is much smarter than me and can fly circles around damn near anybody.

D-Bo-

As Capt Megadeth said...don't waste your time. I am a white male that chose to not worry about what and how others were hired. I focused on me and making sure I was as competitive as I could be. As a result I achieved most goals including working for a major. Sometimes I had help and sometimes not. Sounds much like what you went through.

You have a great attitude that will always prevail. It is too bad that others cannot see this is the primary catalyst to success.

So does this mean that the sons and daughters program is part of the new hire program?

And if so, would any United pilots like to adopt an adult white male? :D

Just like the good old days! We're "takin' it back!"

Man, talk about thread creep.

This is standard for any thread titled:

Airline ____ minimums
How do I get a job at ______?
What's competitive at Airline _____?

etc, etc....you get the picture.

Usually by the third or fourth post, some bitter lazy a$$ has to say something about having being a chick. It's standard Flight Info SOP.

.....

It's like those overseas contracts: 1000 TT with 500 in 747(or A320, etc). that just doesn't occur in nature over here very much.

It is pretty humerous isnt it? Ive read through tons of those job ads, and always scratched my head, until wait----those Ab Initio programs in XXX country can get you into that 1000TT w/500 Hrs on a 737 category.

I was on KLM a few months back. The 747 crew walked up, the FO looked no older than 21.

But your right, not over here.

Not yet, anyway.

GA student starts are down 50% since 9/11. Go walk around your local airport and see how many pilots are flying around with $4/gallon gas. And now Bushy and Blakey want to increase taxes and impose user fees if you file IFR.

We'll be ab initio in 5 years here, but here's the kicker: "We just can't find Americans to take these jobs....."
