At the end of my training I will have the option of choosing ATL or Orlando... Which base would you chose to live in?

Some of the determining factors are..

* Cost of living
*Weather
*Women :)
*Things to do
*Night Life

etc...

Funny that. They told you that you can choose whether you'd like MCO or ATL huh?? Well just as a heads up the choice will be either ATL or ATL...Yup, you heard right.... Hope you like ATL!

Since you work for Freedumb, I'd personally live in Fargo ND and commute. You will have less of a chance of getting pi$$ed on there......

Trust me..i have no problem living in the ATL... Just trying to see what is the better of the two paradises. Also i know i dont get to chose. But talking to someone at MESA... there are openings at both bases..

I live in ATL and have for the past 7 years. I, for one, like it. However, I'm also married with kids and living in the northern suburbs. For a single guy wanting to live in ATL, you'll want to live in town. Here's what to expect from that.....

Cons:
- If you buy anything in Fulton or Dekalb County, be prepared to pay exorbitant property taxes (buddy of mine pays $7000 a year on a $350,000 house)
- If you rent, be prepared to pay at least $850 a month for a one bedroom that's not in close proximity to a crack house
- For a city its size, there's shockingly little to do in the way of social life. Sure, there's Buckhead, Highlands, Decatur, etc., but I've seen better social opportunities in much smaller cities (ie. Nashville, Charlotte, Birmingham)
- Forget public transportation, it hardly exists. Unless you live directly on a MARTA line, you're better off driving.
- High crime in town and a downright terrifying drive to the airport (average 2 traffic fatalities a day in the metro area)

Pros:
- Real estate values in ATL consistently beat the national averages. Buy here, and it's a pretty safe bet.
- Lots of decent professional sporting events
- Pretty friendly population, as a rule of thumb
- Excellent dining and some damm fine bars in Highlands, Decatur, etc.
- Low Catholic population (in other words, Southern girls put out)
- We make good beer here.

I don't know Jack about Orlando, so I won't begin to compare the two. However, there's my take on Atlanta.

Hope that helps, even though I despise you Mesa jackasses and live for the day I can pee on your graves...... relax, I'm kidding.

If you do choose Da' ATL, best of luck to you. It's not a bad town to call home. In fact, some might even call it, "So So Def...." (ASA guys who drive the connector will get that one!)

I've lived in both cities and prefer MCO by far. But, remember that the Disneyland thing wears off and gets old. The good news is that there's plenty of things to do and everything is a short drive or short flight away....ie....Key West, Miami, Daytona Beach.

Not that you'll be able to afford it as a Mesa FO (don't feel bad, I can't afford it as a SWA FO either) but MCO does offer the option of living close to the beach and still being driving distance to work.

Maybe if the FL real estate prices continue to drop <sigh>

Living in MCO itself is not my particular cup of tea. Too touristy, but there is a lot of night life (as mentioned, Church Street Station. It's just as much if not more fun than Buckhead, without the fear of being shot) I'd much rather live an hour or 2 away and be at the beach. But that's just me.

I've been based in both ATL and MCO. I'd take MCO any day, with the only down side being the cost of real estate and the high load factors in the summer which make non rev a pain.

But if you like the whole salt water, palm tree, beach thing, it's hard to beat MCO.

I call BS!

Disney Land is in California. Disney World is located in Florida.

I call BS on the thread. 70 something Fo's 56 lines in MCO and that is after they sent 13 fo's to ATL for TDY for the next bid I live in MCO and im from ATl. Ale House in Orlando all the way.

looks like MCO is winning this one..What about the "Woman Factor"? who wins when it comes to women?

My friend, I lived in Atlanta for the last 21 (6 in the city) years except that I recently moved to Birmingham. For the love of God don't move here if you're single. Everyone's married. This is a place where you end up, not start out.

I had a great experience with the people(as you mentioned) and a fantastic social life in Atl. I'm sort of a bar fly and had a great neighborhood spot, but there are a load of good size parks; it's great walking city with sidewalks and nice neighborhoods, loads and loads of single women, great food spots indoors and outdoors, I could go on and on. And I rode the MARTA to ball games($1.75 beats paying $10 to park) when I didn't walk to them and to the Airport all the time. It's a simple system; I used to walk a couple of blocks to a bus stop and then get on the train. 45 minutes door to door and was cheap. I agree that it's not the best for getting around town for shopping or whatever, but the new beltline would change that. http://www.beltline.org/

I don't know much about MCO, but someone mentioned Church street. I met a guy from there recently at Sun n Fun and he was saying something about it not being very good any more for one reason or another. I would guess that non-reving in and out of MCO could be a nightmare with senior DAL guys and tourists down there.

At any rate....I miss Atlanta terribly. I'm sure that it's obvious, and you can see I'm a little biased.

What "Good" Beer do they have in Atlanta

Sweetwater. Go take the "tour" at the brewery Wed. - Fri. $8 gets you a pint glass and like 6 tickets to sample all the types of beer. I suggest the IPA, Summer Hummer, and 420.

Also, Red Brick and a few others brewed by Atlanta Brewery.

Sweetwater Blue is my fave.

What is church street? And you would choose MCO over ATL?

Church street is a spot with lots of bars and clubs. Good looking chicks too but someone posted that it may be on the decline. Lots of tourist so that's good and bad. Lots of golf course down there too. Don't really care to live in either city but MCO looks a lot cleaner. Non-reving out of there is a pain with high tourist loads.

One advice. As soon as you get your 1000 if you don't already have it, get out. Go to Xjet, Skywest or republic. The freedom side is better than the mesa side since delta requires something like 5.2 crews per plane so you won't experience nearly as much frustration as the ual side. Just remember that everything is run through phx.

It don't matter what you want, you are being shipped to ATL (JFK displacement possible this summer)...you are about to have all the ready reserve and standups that you can possibly handle. On your 8 days off, assuming you don't get Jr. Assigned, you will be so tired that you won't want to do anything but sleep and prepare for the next week in purgatory. There arn't going to be any more MCO awards anytime soon. This entire operation is being shipped north out of MCO as we speak.

The best advice anybody can offer you is to RUN, RUN VERY FAST before you get sucked into this place so far that you can't get out. That's the best that I ever got that I didn't follow.

Just because that is what the contract with Delta requires, does not mean that is what they get. We are under 4 crews per airplane in all bases right now.

Just tell them you're a pilot and it works in any city:laugh:. Anyway, in MCO, anything from Downtown Churchstreet and west you're dealing with tourists. I lived in Winter Park, Oviedo, and Altamonte Springs for quite awhile and hardly ever dealt with the tourist factor unless friends came in town (It's always fun just once a year). Altamonte Springs is a decent area, some good places to go out except it takes a bit to get to the airport during rush hour.Winter Park is a nice area. Rollins College is there. The coeds are interesting! UCF is East of Winter Park. Actually a big school, with lots of students. Not too far at all from the employee lot (about 20-25 minutes). Those girls might buy into the "pilot" thing (since they probably don't know who Mesa is:D)

the trick to living in ATL is...kick someones a$$ the first day, or become someones beotch!

(kudos points for anyone who knows what movie that is from...just thought it was appropriate)
