Republic Deals with Crew Shortages

The Louisville Courier-Journal
By Alex Davis

Republic Airways has canceled at least 22 flights out of Louisville since November because it hasn't had enough pilots or flight attendants.

The Indianapolis-based carrier operates flights from Louisville International Airport for Delta, Continental and United among other companies.

Warren Wilkinson, a spokesman for Republic, said some of the staffing crunch is due to major carriers hiring pilots for the first time in several years. Between Nov. 1 and April 12, he said Republic canceled a total of 80 flights leaving from Louisville, or about 3.5 percent of its 2,297 overall departures.

"We're not alone," Wilkinson said. "The entire industry is facing pilot shortages."

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the nation's major carriers canceled an average of 2.9 percent of all scheduled flights from November through the end of February.

Wilkinson said the Republic's cancellation average is higher than it was during much of last year because of the staffing shortages. Other flights leaving from Louisville were canceled due to weather and other issues.

"This is something new that we've experienced," Wilkinson said in an interview. "We're adjusting our hiring and training programs to keep pace with the higher demand. We believe we'll get ahead of it in the next few months

Ornstein: Mesa growing despite potential labor shortage
ATWOnline
By Sandra Arnoult

Mesa Air Group Chairman and CEO Jonathan Ornstein said hiring enough employees to keep pace with growth, much of which is within his own company, will be one of the most significant challenges facing regional airlines this year.

Last month, Mesa's service agreement with Delta Air Lines was amended to include 14 new CRJ900s for Delta Connection, most likely at Cincinnati or Atlanta. It also expects to launch its Chinese joint venture with Shenzhen Airlines by September with a CRJ200. Mesa, which holds a 25% stake, will handle operations while Shenzen will be in charge of marketing and planning.

Some current Mesa pilots will head to China to fly for the new airline, Ornstein told ATWOnline last week at an analyst conference in Puerto Vallarta. "There is not a glut of pilots and the major airlines are hiring," he said, pointing to his carrier's in-house Pilot Development Program in Farmington, N.M., where enrollment has dropped nearly 40% this year.

He said Mesa and Shenzhen have applied to use a former military airfield located between Beijing and Beijing Capital International Airport as a base. He also revealed that Kunpeng Airlines is a placeholder name for the new JV and may change.

Ornstein remains optimistic about the future of go!, which began flying last summer in Hawaii and currently operates 64 daily inter-island flights with four CRJ200s that he hopes eventually to replace with CRJ900s. The carrier has a market share of about 10%-11%, most of which is coming out of Aloha Airlines, he said. While it currently is unprofitable, he expects go! ultimately will turn a profit. "Building a brand and equity costs far less than it would cost for us to buy [another carrier]," he said.

He declined to discuss the ongoing legal battles with Hawaiian and Aloha, which kicked off when Mesa Air Group announced plans for the low-fare startup more than a year ago

Raise the wages....instead of keeping ALL the profits for the execs.
And maybe people will be interested again in airline careers...Damit!

I think we're beginning to see that. It will come first in the form of signing bonuses and bounties, not wage increases. Wage increases are "permanent" and go to everyone. Signing bonuses, profit sharing, etc. are "soft" and can be easily retracted. Several regionals are now hiring at commercial mins and several are offering training completion bonuses. Some of the non-union airlines have increased their wages to be more competitive and to increase retention.

I'm sure Frontier will much happier with Republic as opposed to Horizon...good luck F9

They are. 170's vs CRJ700's.....do you like to bend over when you have to take a pi$$?

100% completion factor. You might want to go back to the general aviation section where you might have a clue

Oh well, I guess there must be a whore shortage! I thought prostitution was one of the oldest professions out there?

THE FRONTIER CUSTOMERS ARE ALREADY EXPRESSING HOW MUCH THEY LIKE REPUBIC! Great people, great service, great airplane.
BUH-BYE HORIZON, bets of luck to you.

too bad the people over at Horizon make a hell of a lot more $$$ flying the 37 seat dash then you do in that 70 seat Jungle jet!

Yea, it's all about the "big bucks" and history of acting like the "big boys" over there. Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.

I asked the 8-ball if I should apply to Mesa. It said "Maybe." Spurious reasoning indeed, it should have said "HECK YES!!!" [/sarc]

Was F9 unhappy with Horizon?? I don't think so.

They just want cheap labor like the rest of them.

They got it.......... so good luck............and I acutally mean it good luck I hope all parties are happy and prosper.

What is with the hate anyway?

Did a QX guy do your wife/girlfriend or boyfriend/lover or whatever the PC term is today......not that there is anything wrong with that!

With regard to the pilot shortage: It's only hurting the regionals.

About the RAH/F9 deal: Wexford!!

Now, how many times have you to be told? If we had a contract as good as QX's, we'd still be flying for F9. Why? Wexford!!

That must be why the Horizon pilot at my crashpad is getting called in to fly the flights that Replublic can't staff. The flights may be completed, but Horizon is still bailing them out.

I think the its not so much pilot shortage as it is growth. Some people want to throw rocks saying that its because no one wants to work for crappy wages..... Its aviation, its crappy one way or another you are gonna have to give something of yourself to be in this business. Its emotional or Financial. The people that dont like Mesa or Republic are the ones that are stuck at the same seniority number every 28 days when the bids come out. Just be gald we are not Flight Attendants, They have it much worse, not only the company want to screw with them. They have to deal with the pissed off pax......

Are you kidding me? 100% completion factor? Republic just canceled an overnight out of DEN last night because of no captain.

There is never ever going to be a shortage. There will always be someone willing to do the job at 250hrs.
The growth really has stopped since 911, just there are a lot of empty schools in america that are dying for students. We need to educate the future pilots about what this industry is all about. The less people in training is more money available in the future.

Just like to CAL customers were so happy to see CHQ....oh wait, I think those customers got bumped and are still waiting to get on that weight restricted flight.

You're clueless. Pull your head out of the sand and ask yourself why you choose to lie for your inept management. Continental is less than thrilled with your stellar performance, so is Delta for that matter. When the "republic" house is truly in order, then feel free to drop in and talk smack. Until then you should just pipe down.

Partner results On-Time [A’14] Completion Factor
American 73.3% 96.0%
Continental 57.6% 95.1%
Delta 78.0% 97.6%
Frontier 69.0% 96.9%
US Airways 58.6% 94.4%
United 70.3% 96.0%

Here is the latest from republic....100% ?

Hey Master Shake, the only reason you say that is becuase your management feeds you this bull****!, because we are flying now for CO. No I am not a pilot, I am a person on the ground here at CHQ busting my a** trying my best, along with our flight crews to provide DL and CO with the best service we can. Oh by the way, why is your company flying 10 aircraft for DL off the west coast? Cannot make it alone has an independent????

I mean you want to slam Republic Holdings, okay well can you say Independence, oh wait your company has a plan. Sure good loads now but for how long, and will it pay the cost of the overhead to be an independent. Oh that is right you had to pick up flying for DL.

I am sure Express jet offered stellar performance at first also, when you got new aircraft in the fleet, and lets see how well you start up with DL in the LAX market...AND WE ALL WILL BE WATCHING. Oh excuse me I worked the DL system here last night and I had 100% completion and 98.5% on time on my desk...so DL is unhappy...Get your head of the Sand DUDE

Well things seemed to be going just fine for the Jet Blue flying we did (which was very short notice) as well as the branded flying. So you can expect more of the same from XJT in LAX. Oh by the way please enlighten me as to the bull**** XJT mgmt is feeding since you apparently have some inside info that Jim Ream must have told you because if not how the hell would you know?

No, you pull your head out. Your performance for CAL has been atrocious. Period. Go ahead and try and argue that.

Secondly, we got the Delta flying because they saw what we offer and were willing to pay the price. Yes, we were more expensive and yet somehow got the job. Go ahead and watch. You'll see how it's done properly. As for our experiment, well your reference to ACA/FlyI just shows your real ignorance to what we're doing.

You should be pissed, but not at me. Be pissed at your reverend bedford for lying to you. He told you that Republshuttleaqua was the chosen one.

He lied.

Drizzle...do not confuse us with crew scheduling?? And if you are one of the pilots that call dispatch when we are swamped with weather issues and other issues, just keep dialing crew scheduling, because we are not a answering service for them or your secretary.

Just keep that in mind, and I have probably been in aviation longer than you have been alive

You do not have any idea what you are talking about do you? They are much happier with republic, come on E170's vs. CRJ700's, 100% completion factor, some of the friendliest employees in aviation. Dont worry they are happier.
