CNN is reporting a Shuttle America -170 from Atlanta going off of RWY 28 (the shortest RWY at CLE), snow/visibility a factor vis <1mile but who knows...Looks like good visibility there now. Not sure how it was earlier.

Well, what we will all want to know is what were the braking action reports before landing and hopefully taken after the slide off. Where was the point of first touchdown. Were the TRs deployed and when? etc... etc...

Until we know that then not much to see here.

CLEVELAND -- A Delta Airlines commuter plane went off a runway at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Sunday as it was landing.
Officials believe snowy weather may have caused the plane to crash near NASA Glenn at about 3 p.m. There were snow squalls in the area at the time of the accident.
There were 74 passengers on board the plane. No one was injured
The airport used buses to get the people off the aircraft and to the terminal.
Cleveland police, firefighters, EMS and airport operation teams are at the scene.
Both engines of the plane were damaged in the crash. The nose of the plane was either damaged or buried in snow, an airport representative said.
The plane also took out part of the perimeter fence at the airport and damages some antennas.
There was no immediate word on where the plane was coming from.
Airport officials said some flights scheduled to arrive in Cleveland were being diverted to Columbus.

Just saw the video on the local channel. Looks like he's off the end of 28 just through the airport perimeter fence. Like someone above said RWY 28 is only 6000 ft long, 4900 ft available when landing beyond the glidslope. CLE will use 28 when the winds are more favorable for it and they are plowing one of the 24s at the time.

Sadly this is very similar to the SW MDW accident. Short runway, shorter landing with the glide and heavy, heavy snow at the time.

We've had some pretty heavy lake effect snow squalls today which is strange since the lake is frozen over. All it takes is to be landing when one of those showers is letting loose over the airport. Funny thing is usually five minutes later, the sun is out and shining. Someone landed just before this one and had no problems but no idea what conditions they had for landing vs. what the E170 had.

not mon morning qbing but - on the 170 when you add gust factor plus ice speeds with high landing weight you get Vapp speeds approaching 150kts. That can be a real bitch when your down to around a 5000ft runway left for rollout.

in these situations (many speed additives) it is wise to go with flaps full landing - you decrease Vapp and ref by 10 kts. -10kts at 70000lb landing weight helps, remember momentum(or energy you need to dissapate on landing) increases with the square of velocity.

I will say this: If you don't fly in and out of CLE on a somewhat regular basis, you certainly wouldn't expect to be using the shortest runway available under these weather conditions. The wind hasn't been that strong today so I can only think they must have been plowing 24R at the time and therefore it wasn't available for landing. Therefore they'll go with 28 to keep from having to use 24L for departures and arrivals.

Hopefully if anything good is to come of all this it will be that they quit using Rwy 28 when there is any kind of reduced braking. It just doesn't have any margin for error under these weather conditions, just like 31C at MDW.

Your are right, but used the wrong word. Momentum(p) and Kinetic Energary(KE) are two different things. KE=1/2mass x velocity sqaured. p=mass x velocity.

Kinetic Engergy is what you are describing. It is normally used to calculate things such as braking.

Looks like the Rwy 28 localizer antenna bought the farm again.

Wasn't it destroyed a few years back by a cargo plane when the same thing happened? It took the airport quite a while to get it rebuilt and certified. That's going to cut the arrival rate quite a bit- looks like another winter of long EDCT times for Cleveland again. At least no one was hurt...

METARs do not equal what reports the crew had from the tower or ATIS.

ATIS is always overriding factor. Until it has been changed that is what is legal to the FAA and NTSB. The rest is hearsay.

ATIS means nothing if the controller gives something different. If you are on final and ATIS say vis is 1/4 mile or 1400 RVR, then ATC comes on and says that vis is up to 1/2 or 1800, then you use what ATC says. These guys probably got an update from the tower on the vis while on approach.
