I thought I would dust off this old gem to kill the PIC thread.

Let's say you had a giant treadmill with an airplane on it.

As you add power and begin to move for the takoff roll, the treadmill speeds up and keeps the plane in the same relative position. As the plane goes faster, the treadmill speeds up, always maintaining the aircraft's relative position.

Would you ever be able to take off?

GO!!

ummmm no...

No airflow over the wings hence no flying!
While the tire speed would be high the airspeed would remain zero.

NO, because you are passed out drunk in a bar, and as soon as the aircraft takes off you will be awakened by Los Federales. AYYE!

Not this again...

FOLKS!!!!!!!

Move along, nothing to see here.....

This is surely record-setting material at its finest. At least it was the first time around.

:p

A thread like this went to over 200 pages on a non-pilot forum, it got to the point where people hounded the mythbusters to do it. They refused citing that even an idiot would know it would take off.

Looking at your avatar, I can see where the vein...err...vane comes from!:D

im even excited about this thread.....it should be fun.

It will just roll off of this great big treadmill because there is no force at the wheels to push against the treadmill. Zoom, zoom , zoom

What if you increase the incline of the treadmill? This would be like a ramp increasing the deck angle and changing the relative wind. The aircraft would surely fly.

Oh, I see what you did here.

I just wanted to reiterate this before this thread turns into the embarrassing disaster that the last one did.
