Comair..... to go or not to go

Hello-


I applied to Comair yesturday and heard back that they wanted me to come in and interview. I am somewhat concerned because of 2 reasons. 1) I heard back within 12 hours of applying (and my times aren't that great) and also because all this demand for pilot doesn't seem to be caused by an increase in flying... just more people are leaving.


Furthermore, I just was browsing the forums and saw that Manegment is trying to throw out the pilot contract in bankrouptcy court (ALPA is reporting this).


I guess my question is this. If I do indeed get offered a position with Comair, is it going to look like i'm willing to work for less? Also, would I even have a job in a year?

It won't look bad for you personally if you come to work here. As for the part about having a job in a year, no one really knows right now.

Take the interview, you can always turn the job down later.

Unless you have a better job, take the job. We have no training contract. You can always leave and go else where.

As for the "willing to work for less comment". I'm not sure where you got that. Comair has the highest pay-scales at the moment. They will come down, but will not be below what you would work for at the other regionals that are hiring.

As for having a job in a year, your in jeopordy at any airline. You roll the dice and you get, what you get. When I got hired here almost 20 months ago, this was the regional people wanted to come to, now we are in Ch. 11.

The company will probably win its 1113 motion (I base that on what happened with Mesaba and out FA's) and I look for a TA to be had before any thing is imposed.

If you applied, that means that you want to work there, no?
you should be glad that they got back to you so early...some places, you'll have to wait for months without having a clue if they will call.

Now, about the situation at Comair, you should have done your research there before applying, and know where you're going into.
If they hire you, it means that they need pilots, I don't think that your job will be at risk, but what do I know!

At least, you will get free training, housing and pay, and a fabulous "SIC type rating" on the Canadian Rotten Jet...

you're gonna be an FO forever at any of the regionals. Not enough hiring at the majors for any meaningful movement. Things could get better but there would have to be a ton of hiring or massive retirements. Bottom line, be prepared to live in poverty for the next 10 years chasing a golden carrot that someone ate long ago. But hey you can carry a backpack and gel your hair stiff and no one cares.

Like most have said before. Interview and have the option. Whether or not to accept is up to you. I love it here. I know the situation that the company is in, but the people I work with are the best. If you get CVG as a base expect to be on reserve a very long time. If you get JFK get ready to fly your ass off. I truly hope we come out of this mess with a good future. look at it like this....your profile says you have 900 hours right..so your options are mesa (ha), Eagle, Comair, Colgan and possible a few others...Comair is the powerhouse of these carriers, or at least has been traditionally, Eagle is good, but yes upgrades take literally an eternity and you might be stuck somewhere you really dont want to be. As others have said, if things dont work out at Comair, take the experience and move on, with that beng said, we all hope Comair will pull through, and in my personal opinion they will...I think the worst thing you could possibly do would be to pass on an oppurtunity like this, hoping for something better, because the sad truth is theres not much out there...good luck

I just cancelled my interview myself. Partially because I just started a new job, but also because I live on the other end of the country and have a wife and kid to take care of. If it looked like I would be there for a few years, it would be worth it, but that doesn't look like it'll happen. If I were single, I'd probably go for it regardless.
As far as your "image" goes, look at all the other threads, people respect Comair, I'm sure it would look good on your work history.

Thanks a bunch guys. I appricate the positive comments. I am going to go take the interview. Hopefully, by the time my interview goes through, we should all know how Comair has done with bidding for contracts and pilot conessions. If I am lucky enough to get offerered a job, and things are looking like Comair is about to kick butt (we all hope they do), then I will take the job in a second.
