And as far as skillset, even the PTS allows deviations which will set off altitude busts in some airspace.

With the auto pilot inop you can't get in that airspace anyway. The rules have you covered.

I may learn something here. When exactly does the ATC computer kick out a report below FL 290?

Imagine that!! Me not knowing WTF I'm talki'n about?
 
Although I'm in a Saab. I haven't used the autopilot in 3 months. I find it more enjoyable to fly the plane than watch the computer do it. I fly 22 legs in 4 days (half of which im flying) I don't see what the big deal is.

One time I was dispatched with a rook FO, under 3585 because a tempo of a 1/4 mile. Got there had to hold and airinc company with deferred autopilot. Eventually made it in. Yeah it was more work than button pushing but, I ain't no bitch!!
