Used to be you could 'uh, scuse me' while you re-situated the important bits. Now you have to "hey is there any ice on your side?" while pretending to look out the left window (adjust, adjust), or "I think we are just passing Vegas on your side" while pretending to crane out there window (adjust, adjust).
Tell us, wimen - should we just say, "uh avert your eyes for a minute won't you?". Maybe more talcum powder?
one more reason why I don't let kids fly me in a jet...keep up the good work.

You should just do a search on this topic and you will find more hot rhetoric than you could possibly stand.

If you are intending to pursue aviation as a career be you a woman or a man it is going to take a lot of hard work, period!

There will be times when it will appear that people of lesser ability of either sex will get opportunities prior to or instead of people that on first impression would be better qualified. It just doesn't matter. It's best not to let this phenomena keep you up nights. There are many different factors involved in pilot selection by different companies. I don't know anyone that can make any sense of it.

There still is gender issues that will for the most part always be present. I am always denying their existence. I always give everyone the benefit of the doubt so I am always floored when I have to face those issues. As a woman in aviation you will have to face discrimination and prejudice. Get used to it, delevop a thicker skin and do your best NOT to perpetuate negative stereotypes.

If you are going to pursue a career in aviation just keep you nose to the grindstone, work hard, be professional, and carry your own weight. This goes for anyone.

yet the women (very few) that I have talked to all snap back quick with a no way...

Failure to admit reality and denial. . Most can see they are given preferential shortcuts, etc, during the hiring process. Fortunately it is a numbers game and they are and will always be in the very very small minority.
 
Do women and minorities get preferential treatment in hiring? You bet they do. If a white male with 2000 hours and a black woman with 2000 hours interview for the same job, you can bet your a$$ that 95% of the time, the black woman is going to get the job because they're a minority and it makes the employer look better to hire minorities. I've seen first hand MANY examples of minorities getting jobs over more qualified majorities simply because they're minorities. It's nothing but discrimination, plain and simple. Affirmative action is just as wrong as hiring someone because they're white (which was the standard practice for a LONG time). The best qualified person should get the job. Period. End of discussion.
 
How to stop discrimination in hiring: Make it illegal to show any reference to, or keep any records of sex or race on company employees. No reference on the job application, no records kept to report. If it's illegal to keep a record or have a reference to any race on file, then there would be no motivation to hire a person based on race or gender. This is a pipe dream, of course, but think about it. How could this not work?
 
That'd never work. You've still got names, which is easy to figure out. Don't forget face to face interviews too.

I know it would never work because it would never happen. But in theory, an employer would hire who they want, based on the individual without trying to put some stupid check in a box.
Maybe we'd put a few of these uppity womenz back in the kitchen where they belong! ;)

Yeah there are women pilots. They just aren't any good.

I have found that women still have to be qualified. I have interviewed at jobs with other women who were qualified and still didn't get the job and some of the men did. I guess it depends on who you know, were you are interviewing and your personality.

I didn't get a job once because I was a woman and the individual that owned the plane didn't feel comfortable with a woman pilot.

I think it is a little tougher in the corporate world than the airline world. I know more women flying for airlines than I do flying corporate and 135.
 
I applied to United Airlines with a friend of mine who happens to be a woman, and we joked that this would finally dispel the myth that guys are at a disadvantage. I had twice the flight time she did (3500 hrs to her 1600+/-), and I had a 4 year degree from ERAU to her 2 year associates degree from a community college (I graduated with a GPA well above hers too). We joked that if she even got called it would be a miracle. We filled out our Apps and mailed em the same moment, and both got the return receipt about a week later.

End result.....She got called for an interview 23 days after applying (they wanted to follow up the letter in case she hadn't received it yet). I never heard a word. So you tell me, who had the advantage.

So how many of you fill out the questionaire (that they say is optional) about gender, ethnicity, veteran's status when hired by somebody? Being a white male I usually leave it blank, maybe that will keep the bean counters guessing. Then they won't know for certain how badly certain minorities are being under-represented so in the future I can get a better shot at a job!

I agree with the sentiment that hiring should be based on ability and qualifications, not gender or race. Period, end of sentence.
