I have not heard of any rumors regarding a possible merger, just wondering if anyone has any opinions.

Totally incompatible fleet--for a small company, that is a HUGE issue.

AirTran already flies up and down the East Coast. With Spirit, they'd fly up and down the East Coast between hubs. The world doesn't need another USAir (pre-AWA). JMO.TC

If you look at Spiritair.com, you'll see that Spirit seems to be concentrating on the islands. They would probably be a good partner for someone, maybe even Airtran, but I can't find anything on any respectable news sites that implies that they are looking at any merger possibilities.

BTW, If you look at frequency out of Spirits traditional cities, you'll see that they are much smaller in the east coast market than they used to be. It appears that they've conceeded most everything but DTW and LGA. I can't blame them, why compete in a saturated market when you can fly island markets where no such competition exists? From this stand point, It does seem that some type of code share would be beneficial. It would allow Frontier/AirTran/Southwest/etc serve the islands without the hassle of dealing with "island time".

I can see Spirit and AirTran doing a codeshare - identical to Frontier/AirTran but as for merger - nah

AAI and Spirit. I've been saying that for years.
Overnight presence in the carribean. Maybe a code share.
Common fleet type doesn't really make a difference

Isn't AirTran preoccupied with doing the Midwest deal?

There are some compatibility issues with that deal.. from the customer service/culture aspect at least...

We shall see...

They do have a nice Caribbean presence.

Because AirTran sucks and Spirit sucks...if you put the two toghether, the combined suckatude would cause a rift in space/time, opening a blackhole, destroying the solar system.

The only way to close such a rift would be to take something that sucks even worse and throw it into the black hole in an effort to collapse it. The only stuff with that with that kind of power that comes to mind is either New Kids on the Block CDs or perhaps an unholy alliance of Country/Western and Rap.

We might try to transmit the combined postings of General Lee, Jetflyer and Ty Webb into the black hole, but that might set off a chain reaction that destroys the universe.

JB would have the same problem with Spirit that AirTran would incompatible fleets very little in common between 319-320-321, now JB/Frontier would be a better story

Incompatible fleets? Jetblue has IAE V2500 engines. Frontier has GE CFM engines. Spirit has IAE V2500 engines. The 319/320/321 has a lot in common. Maybe if you went to college you would already know this. Maybe it's just your sentence structure and I was having a difficult time trying to follow what you were trying to convey.

It is the other parts

I will be the first to admit that I have not disassembled, nor assembled an A320 Family aircraft. However, I have instructed on it for some time now, and for the life of me, I can not figure out what parts on the A318, 319, 320, and 321 are significantly different (barring a few obvious exceptions, i.e. 321 fuel system). You have piqued my interest...please enlighten me.

I can argue with a fair amount of confidence though that an A320 has more in common with an A319 than it does with an E190 or a B717.

Parachute pants, the word groovy, and Elton John sunglasses would probably be enough to close the black hole, but would they keep it closed?
