Do yourself a favor....RENT! I moved out there with the wife back in 99 and bought a new custom home in the Woodlands. Within a year (ok a summer, but the summer is like 10 months long) we knew it wasn't as "great" as we thought. We ended up moving a in three years and then it took 9 months to sell our house! (At a small loss, no less) So our lesson of the day is, find a descent place (Lots of rentals in the woodlands, kingwood etc) and spend a year there to make sure it what you want. Also, I learned the average time a person lives in their home in the woodlands is a whopping 2.5 years (Very transient!).

A friend of mine who is a financial adviser in Houston once told me... Real estate in CA (where we moved from) is an investment; Real Estate in Texas is just a place to store all your sh1t! (so don't expect to make any money off your home)

FWIW if I had to move back to TX it would be to Austin.
