When was the first time you said to someone, "I am a pilot". Was it after you had all your ratings and were a CFI? Did you wait until you were paid to fly? Did you start calling yourself a pilot during training, or just after you got the PPL?
Just curious..

I would call myself a pilot after getting my PPL. After all, I know several very skilled pilots who are masters at flying their planes, but they only have PPL and Instrument licenses.

When you are THE Pilot in Command, so the first time is when you solo. after that it is just adding ratings.... I still tell people I am a student pilot, because I am always learning...

When you can't see your dong anymore 'cause your gut is in the way.

When it looks like you've slept in you clothes for three days.

When pax hand you their bags.

When you couldn't get laid at the Mustang Ranch with $500 in cash.

When people ask "What's that smell?"

When you admire the guys at Whataburger for their schedule and days off.

That's when you can call yourself a pilot.:)

It depends on what the question is:
What do you do for a living? I'm a pilot, I'm a flight instructor....

If you are working on your ratings or just fly for fun, you are still a pilot, so you can call yourself a pilot if you have a piece of paper that says so.

When you've been through a furlough (or two), lost your wife, got another one and lost her too, lost your house, maybe your kids, and are paying alimony and/or child support.

When I was trying to wiggle the pants off a Seniorita, in far away lands.

After I got my PPL.
