Who determines this? You say it can bear more, but the bean counter says we are overdrawn... THE ONLY WAY AN EMPLOYEE CAN CONTROL WAGES IS TO NOT ACCEPT A JOB WITH A SALARY BELOW WHAT THEY THINK THEY DESERVE TO DO THAT JOB!
More idiocy. So we're all supposed to sit around and wait for wages to improve? Or we all flood to fields where wages are lucrative. Guess what happens then? That sector becomes over-saturated and wages plummet.

I don't know about you, but most people only have 30 years or so of working opportunity. People cannot go bouncing around waiting for supply and demand theories to manifest.

There has to be an external motivator to accelerate and protect wages while we're still breathing.

The passengers determine the price. They can bear a nominal increase that will yield a 20% increase in pilot pay. We can help this process through measures that are described adequately throughout this thread. The public needs to fly for various reasons. It's time they pay a fare that compensates pilots reasonably. A 20% increase seems reasonable. Many pilot groups have sustained a 30 to 40 percent decrease in pay over the past 10 ten years. 20% is just a start. If the public can't afford it, then park more airplanes until the optimal level is attained. Let their free loading asses drive 2000 miles to see grandma. They will rethink the value of airline travel...

Here in OZ we have a federal minimum "Award Wage" professional aviators can be paid. i.e 43k for a CPL flying M/E IFR. Airline wages typically exceed this obviously.
 
Let's face it. On paper, we are an expense. No more, no less. If they could get people to fly on airplanes without the labor expense (us), they would. In the mean time, as long as there are pilots lining up to do the job (at any level), pay will be whatever "they" can get away with.

This seems fair to me. The Regional Airline model has artificially suppressed Regional pilot wages. "You gotta stay competetive" falls on deaf ears when folks can't pay their bills and feed their families. I do not believe the market will bare a longterm unliveable wage at the Regional level. There will be a mass exodus of Captains and First Officers from SkyWest in the coming years. Should make for an interesting situation.
 
Be "Nice"

Competitive pay and work rules plus a little extra for goodwill. More importantly be nice and treat your employees as assets not liabilities. It will be returned in spades.

Sounds good in theory but in practice its as clear as mud, pilots should be paid a "fair" wage, they should be paid what they "deserve". These are all terms we hear frequently but they are all vague, ambiguous, and inflammatory.

The reality is that the "market" will determine what a pilot is paid. The "market" is bases on the network carriers RFP process. Need examples, just look at Commair and soon to be Express Jet?
 
In the first chapter in flying the line the author answers that very question. The short version is whatever they can negotiate. Alpa has done a poor job of negotiating.
