This is from a local discussion board near Atlanta. These people make my blood boil. Do they think this is a socialist country where no one deserves to make more than them?

General Discussion - Delta Airlines...Do or Die?
http://acx.prospero.com/dir-app/icon.aspx?realmId=0&iconTypeId=4&iconName=emailSubscribe From: Maines4 7:41 am To: ALL (1 of 12) 1610.1 Ok, Lets talk Delta again.....They are in court today and it is do or die for the airline to survive. I'll go ahead and put this one out there, meaning my opinion since thats what this site is all about. I for one on standing behind the airlines. I think the piolots are being very greedy. They have helped drain the airlines I think. They have been making very unreasonalble salaries for way too long. I know they are in the drivers seat, but please when it comes to saving the airlines, give up some more. Heck they can probably still afford to keep there mansions! I know too many people suffering that are not piolots and have lost their homes and way more than the piolots stand to loose by taking another pay cut. Anyway, I can imagine it must be hard, but it doesnt need to be hardest on the other employees that don't fly the planes. I think it fair that everyone sacrifice for a common cause to SAVE THE COMPANY! Thank for listening.

From: 11CC 10:59 am To: Maines4 unread (2 of 12) 1610.2 in reply to 1610.1 What should a pilot make then, AM? What would you think to be a "reasonable" salarie? If they make so much money and their lives are so great living in mansions, then why don't you become an airline pilot since you seem so jealous. You obviously have no clue as to what you are talking about. How much more should they give up? They have already given up 30% of their pay and some work rules. Now, they are being asked for another 20% pay cut. In case you have trouble with math, that's a total pay cut of 50%. What if your employer came to you and said he needed to take 50% of your pay and change the work rules for the worse. Not to mention the pensions they have been paying into their whole careers at Delta will be taken away. Figure that into the whole pay cut issue and that probably comes to near 70%. The pilots stand to lose a whole lot more than anyone else in this. Here's why. To an airline pilot, seniority is everything. You cannot advance to captain, or hold a set schedule until you have been their long enough, and have had enough pilots ahead of you retire or leave for medical reasons. It can take 5 or more years to hold a schedule and it can take 10 or 15 years to make captain. If you leave and go to another airline, guess what, you start all over. Unlike any other profession, your experience does not transfer to other companies. The real blame here is the incompetent management team at Delta. Before 9-11, Delta had the best balance sheet of any airline. Now look at them.

From: BOX (LeeBox1) 11:39 am To: 11CC (3 of 12) 1610.3 in reply to 1610.2 I think THEY should be in line with the rest of the industry...... the proposed pay cuts would put the pilot group right in the MIDDLE of the payscale amoung major airlines.
ALL Delta employees have taken cuts, yet, the pilots INSIST that everyone else take cuts to preserve their pay / lifestyle........
and FYI, all the other employee group pay cuts add up to much more than the company originally published, take a look, we make less than Airtran or JetBlue.
Perhaps you should look at your own ALPA site, you will see DAL pilots are at or near the top of the WORLD in pay.
If you look past the ALPA rhetoric, you will see that DAL has the HIGHEST crew block hour cost of any airline........ you should also note that we have the LOWEST MTC total block hour cost.
Look past the ALPA pep rally, if you fail to concede, or if you strike, or sick out in mass, WE all loose....
How about thinking about someone other than yourselves for a change!!!
I am in no way defending MGT, past or present, the Golden parachutes were shameful, of course all of the pilots that bailed out with a "silver" parachute is no less shameful.
And, don't you think that the 1000 of pilots on the streets right now would LOVE to cross the ALPA picket lines?????

From: MBW 12:30 pm To: ALL (4 of 12) 1610.4 in reply to 1610.1 AGREED! What do the Pilots stand to gain by striking? Think the other airlines are going to be ready to hire a pilot that was involved in the final straw that killed the airline they previously worked for??? NOT! I understand that Delta has been mis-managed and maybe there are many that make a whole lot of money. But there are MORE middle class families whose lives will be really in a shambles if the pilots (who make double and triple salary and work 1/3 the hours) kill Delta.
My Mom always said,"be careful not to cut off your nose to spite your face."

From: 11CC 12:44 pm To: BOX (LeeBox1) (5 of 12) 1610.5 in reply to 1610.3 Those "silver" parachutes were packed by the pilots. That is their retirement money that they negotiated and contributed to. Why don't you look at airlinepilotpay.com and see what delta pilots are paid currently and compare that to other companies on similar equipment. You'll find that it's right in line with what an Airtran pilot is making and less than Southwest on similar equipment. Take an additional 20% from that and see where that puts them. Remember most airlines pay pilots based on the number of lives they are responsible for. The more passengers a plane holds, the more pay usually.

From: 11CC 12:59 pm To: MBW (6 of 12) 1610.6 in reply to 1610.4 I can assure you that pilots work more than you think. I'm not a pilot for Delta, but I put in over 3100 hours last year on company business being away from home and flying. Sure, we can agree to do this job for $10 dollars an hour and that would probably make you happy if you make more than that, but good luck finding anyone who will invest the amount of time, money, and effort it takes to fly for an airline.

From: MBW 1:13 pm To: 11CC (7 of 12) 1610.7 in reply to 1610.6 My neighbor is an Air-Tran pilot and I have numerous family members who have worked for Delta for 20+ years each. My brother was a Delta pilot for many years until his sight was affect due to medical reason. All agree - that the pilots striking is a really greedy and bad move. The pilot who I asked just to get a pilot's view stated that to save the airline he'd take the cut. My brother who is now over contract maintenance has taken a major cut, but says it's necessary for the survival of the airline. A lot of people will have free time on their hands - especially pilots if they strike.
... believe me I do appreciate the pilots....they take the lives of many in their hands every day. I just think it's foolish for then to strike and lose their jobs and the jobs of all the other employees.

From: BOX (LeeBox1) 1:15 pm To: 11CC (8 of 12) 1610.8 in reply to 1610.5 Those "silver" parachutes were no more packed by the individual pilots than any other COMPANY FUNDED employee pension at any other company in America.
Just as most employees at many American companies, you are faced with the lose of a COMPANY funded pension,,,,,,
NEWSFLASH!!!!!! WE ALL LOST OUR COMPANY FUNDED PENSIONS.
ALPA has taken this issue, as they have done with many, and convinced its members that they are the only ones "targeted".
So, just what makes the Pilot group more "entitled" / "better" than everyone else????? What makes the Pilot group more "deserving" than the rest of us?????? Why should you be moved ahead of everyone else when it comes to pensions????
Seems the pilots want to ignore the fact that the burden of their pensions is borne on the shoulders of the current employees.
You may want to get a different website to back up your argument, Every equipment type I checked, DALPA is 1st or 2nd in the WORLD.
The books and payrates are all public knowledge now, all turned over to the SEC and Courts, every accountant / lawyer / trader / debtor has looked at the books, seems they all arrive at a conclusion that DALPA doesn't see.........
I know the pay cut hurts, My pay is down about 37% PLUS loss of benefits and loss of pension.
It is high time that DALPA admit that they have been as much a part of the problem as any past MGMT team we may have had.
A Quote from past DALPA leadership>>>>>>>>
"We don’t want to kill the golden goose. We just want to choke it by the neck until it gives us every last egg."

From: 11CC 2:17 pm To: BOX (LeeBox1) (10 of 12) 1610.10 in reply to 1610.8 Compare a 12-year Airtran 737 captain to an 12-year Delta 737 Captain. Only a difference of 3 dollars in favor of Delta. Or a Southwest 737 Captain, a difference of 34 dollars in favor of Southwest. What makes a doctor or a lawyer more "entitled" or "deserving" than the rest of us? It is simple supply and demand. These professions are not easy to get into and it takes years of work and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars to get there. There are fewer people willing to work hard enough to get there. That's the way most careers are in this country. The more education and experience you have, the more you usually make.

From: BOX (LeeBox1) 2:28 pm To: 11CC (11 of 12) 1610.11 in reply to 1610.10 You seem to forget, YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE of a company....
You are not a Doctor, lawyer or even an indian chief.....
Nothing more than an employee of a bankrupt company, no more deserving than any other employee of the same company....
sure, you made out like a bandit for years, hey... times were good then,,,,,,,,
THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW..........

From: 11CC 2:44 pm To: BOX (LeeBox1) unread (12 of 12) 1610.12 in reply to 1610.11 You are exactly right, an airline pilot is an employee. They have a specific skill. Like a lawyer at a law firm or a doctor at a hospital, they are employees with a skill. In America, we have the freedom to negotiate what we think is a fair wage for our skills. If those wages don't meet our expectations, we have the choice to not work there. That is what the pilots are deciding right now. If the courts order another 20 percent pay cut, it may not be worth it to them to do that job anymore. They may decide to walk out. Consequently, since an airline pilot is not easily and immediately replaceable (another factor in determining wages), the company will shut down as a result. You can't force someone to work at a company. Just because they make more than you does not make them evil and greedy.

The anti-pilot crowd can't have it both ways. If the job requirements of a pilot are so inimitable that by them leaving, it would shut the company down, then the worth of a pilot is terribly underestimated. I can't think of any other group at any airline that is more valuable than the pilot group, bar none. Start with your ticket price including a "pilot surcharge" and pay the others with what’s left.

Just ignore comments like those you posted...not worth getting upset.

People have always resented pilots...always will...comes with the territory.

These people got their $59 tickets and still aren't happy because they operate under the universal definition of "overpaid":

Anyone who makes more money than THEY do.

Class warfare...Boortz talks about it all the time...and he's right.

You're correct sir! I purchased a ticket last week, cause I needed to get to my destination.. Bought a positive space ticket on US Air, and the cost was only 179.00 r/t. All I heard on the way home from the guy next to me was how lousy the service was. Actually, their service was pretty good I thought, so I asked the guy what he paid for his ticket....He paid 79.00 r/t. I told him he had a lot of balls to complain about service when he couldn't have driven that distance for that price....Needless to say, he was quiet the rest of the flight.

fed up with the general public's perception of what they "think" I'm worth!

I love it. Overpaid, huh??? Lets see them say this when something goes wrong on one of there flights, and the pilots save there worthless lives:p . I say worthless because that is exactly how they think of us.

I agree. I cringe every time I see someone talk about "taking our case to the public". I've commented on this issue a few times, and I guess I'll do it again.

The public doesn't care, in the least, about the plight of airlines pilots. They consider you overpaid prima donnas who don't deserve what they have because they think what you get is inflating their ticket price( $79 is just waaaay too much ).

You know what ? I agree with the public. There is no frikkin' reason why the public should give one microsecond of their lives to the plight of airlines pilots. What's in it for them ? ....nothing...

Airline pilots need to STOP thinking they can get any support/empathy/sympathy from the public. In fact, pleading your case to the disinterested, resentful public humiliates and diminishes the individual pilot and the profession.

Do what you have to do to correct the situation...whatever that is. STOP THINKING YOU CAN INVOLVE THE PUBLIC. JUST STOP IT...

and that includes YOU...ALPA....

Well said. Point A to B safely and go home. They could care less if you say good bye. Just go home and enjoy your family.

And that is exactly what I do.... nothing more and nothing less. I am really beginning to miss the short time I spent flying freighters around for a living!

It always amazes me. Pilots are overpaid and $79 is too much to pay for a ticket. These are the same people that pay how much to see a bunch of thugs dribble, shoot, pass, run, punt, and bunt. Since provinding safety does not provide entertainment, we must be overpaid.
