You do get paid 1/2 of the deadhead flight time, but his point is that it will take him 8 hours to get from point A to point C, but since the flight time will only add up to around 5 hours, he'll get "less than 3 hours pay credit". Apparently it was just the first thing they found in the computer...got a DH through Philliy then Buff instead. They just didn't care I guess.
