typhoonpilot said:I'm surprised your airplane let you land. I'm not saying that in a mean way. A few years ago the wind was over 70 knots in PIT and the airport closed for arrivals. When it re-opened we popped over from Dayton and it was still 40 gusting to 56, pretty much right down the runway. We landed okay in a 737 but watched two Airbii go-around during the taxi in. Arriving at the terminal we noticed not an Airbus in sight, only Boeing and Douglas products. Something about ground speed min in the Airbus that causes a problem in those situations ?

The groundspeed mini function might become a problem if the winds are really strong. It's really a protection against gusts and sudden airspeed losses due to windshear, not a performance limit (it's always at or above Vapp), so you don't absolutely positively need to follow it in all cases. However, it's best to let it do its job. It turns out the the maximum steady headwind that applies to the GS mini function is 45 kts. Anything over 45 kt headwind component and the airplane will add to your airspeed, even if you put in a larger number in the wind field. It's possible that so much speed is added that you can't get below flap configuration speed. Oops. Didn't happen to me, but it was close. In that case, you can manually select a lower number. The airspeed is still well above Vapp, so stall margin is well protected, but you can configure. But let's face it, if the wind is that strong, I'm going somewhere else, unless there's an strong inversion or something and I know for sure that the winds at the surface are considerably lighter than the winds aloft that are giving me problems.
