There are two forms of Junior Manning; Off Day (drafted) and extention (tacked on the end of your existing trip). You've already read a little about off day. You're on your day off, the phone rings and the caller ID registers an unusual number? (or a known scheduler number).....DON'T ANSWER THE DARN PHONE !!!!! Many play the drunk card, but when you do, you find yourself all of a sudden getting more than your fair share of "random breathalyzers" at work. One trick is to give them your Cell phone number as a contact. That way tell them you'll be in as soon as your able, but you're currently in xxxx (insert some point 1500 miles away) You see, most airlines don't have provisions in their contracts that require you to be within a certain distance of the airport on your day off. Therefore, you still didn't "refuse" and you're still probably not much good to them.
The killer junior man is the "extension". There is very little defense against that one. You are on the last leg of your trip, with plans to get home in time for your son's baseball game or dinner plans with your wife. Minutes before you arrive, the company radio advises you of the dreaded "call scheduling" message which you cannot legally ignore. You on the hook. Pilots have tried to ignore such messages claiming ignorance but usually end up suspended for such actions. So when you do answer, you're informed of an extra round trip.
The final and worst of all is a "combination" attack. It usually comes when something mega-important is going on in your life. Example: While reading the wedding announcements in all the newspapers, the chief scheduler notices one of the couples has your last name. When the full name of of the Bride/Groom is compared against your personel records, it is discovered that said person is your son/daughter. (or son/son if your child is an alternate lifestyler) The chief scheduler immediately places your name on the calender at the appropriate date. Then on the last day of your last trip just before the wedding, YOU GET THE DREADED SCHEDULING CALL ON THE WAY IN AS DESCRIBED IN THE EXTENSION PARAGRAPH. When you contact scheduling, you are notified of a Day trip that is, you guessed it, on the day of the wedding.
That's how they do things as A.S.A anyhow!!! Maybe life is better at Mesa or somewhere.
