scheduler needs to find crew for a flight ... starts at the bottom of seniority llist and calls on your day off to get you to fly (no choice ... if you answer the phone ... go or its a missed trip) [now of course if you've been drinking you're not legal so either don't answer scheduling's call (caller id) or constantly drink]

There are two forms of Junior Manning; Off Day (drafted) and extention (tacked on the end of your existing trip). You've already read a little about off day. You're on your day off, the phone rings and the caller ID registers an unusual number? (or a known scheduler number).....DON'T ANSWER THE DARN PHONE !!!!! Many play the drunk card, but when you do, you find yourself all of a sudden getting more than your fair share of "random breathalyzers" at work. One trick is to give them your Cell phone number as a contact. That way tell them you'll be in as soon as your able, but you're currently in xxxx (insert some point 1500 miles away) You see, most airlines don't have provisions in their contracts that require you to be within a certain distance of the airport on your day off. Therefore, you still didn't "refuse" and you're still probably not much good to them.

The killer junior man is the "extension". There is very little defense against that one. You are on the last leg of your trip, with plans to get home in time for your son's baseball game or dinner plans with your wife. Minutes before you arrive, the company radio advises you of the dreaded "call scheduling" message which you cannot legally ignore. You on the hook. Pilots have tried to ignore such messages claiming ignorance but usually end up suspended for such actions. So when you do answer, you're informed of an extra round trip.

The final and worst of all is a "combination" attack. It usually comes when something mega-important is going on in your life. Example: While reading the wedding announcements in all the newspapers, the chief scheduler notices one of the couples has your last name. When the full name of of the Bride/Groom is compared against your personel records, it is discovered that said person is your son/daughter. (or son/son if your child is an alternate lifestyler) The chief scheduler immediately places your name on the calender at the appropriate date. Then on the last day of your last trip just before the wedding, YOU GET THE DREADED SCHEDULING CALL ON THE WAY IN AS DESCRIBED IN THE EXTENSION PARAGRAPH. When you contact scheduling, you are notified of a Day trip that is, you guessed it, on the day of the wedding.

That's how they do things as A.S.A anyhow!!! Maybe life is better at Mesa or somewhere.

Junior manning is when you see scheduling on the caller ID and don't answer the phone on your day off. If for some reason another person answers the phone (wife, girlfriend, whatever) you train them to say "he had wine with dinner sorry he can't be of assistance for you tonight goodbye". Any other response is unacceptable. My opinion, when people are furloughed, picking up extra time or taking junior man is not right. If the company can't staff it's flying properly it's their problem.

(and GeekMaster, being tagged at the gate or on airport property is the worst cause you have little outs, sorry they screwed you, we've all been there)

what kind of compensation do you get for being junior manned? Is the pay the same? Do they help you in any other way?

Couldn't agree more!

Pay is at 1.5 times regular.

Junior manning is what the spineless mangament team at Mesaba kicks into high gear after the massive furloughs and captain downgrades.

Very surprised to hear that Bedford hasn't carried over to CHQ the time tested and loved method of crewing aircraft from his years at XJ.

JM pay is based on what your contract says.

Good question to ask if you are interviewing somewhere. Mesaba, Co-EX, and Air Wisconsin I know have time and a half for JM pay. Only airline I've come across that doesn't is Colgan but there may be more.

Yes it is nice but apparently our contract is still junk according to most other regional pilots on this board.
