Folks...not to fan or douse the flames of your percieved disgust over any of the Presidents, but here we go:
There's three branches of the government:
--the Judicial. Those esteemed Supreme Court judges who nitpick the Constitution and the interpretation of the law in this increasingly bizarre and litigation-obsessed country we live in.
--the Executive. The elected President and his appointed staff of advisors, Secretary of XXXXXXX's, lawyers, etc. They "set the policy and the direction of the nation" based on their view of the world. (And-as some would say- the needs of their constituents, lobbyists, friends, media polls, debts to donors, etc. And face it, those are heavily apparent in every political party---red and blue are equally guilty of getting stroked hard and heavy by the money men/women). Their job is to "set the compass heading" of the USS America fleet.
--the Legislative. The 535 members of Congress...the (sarcasm on) hallowed halls (sarcasm off)of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Those esteemed 535 members--with their advisors, aides, "necessary" staffs, lawyers, media polls, lobbyists, debt to donors, etc.--outnumber the White House administration by literally thousands. Their job is to direct how the USS America fleet is funded, kept safe, paid, kept fed, etc.
It's sort of like the old fable about the boy who cried "Wolf". The Congress and their "A-type personalities" have been crying Wolf for decades...pointing the finger at whatever administration is in the White House and blaming the Bush Administration (current victim) for each and every failure of each and every facet (gas, abortion, education, price of milk, gun control, the two-toed mosquito in Florida, strippers compenstion, etc.) of American life. Our money/ratings hungry media are just happy to display whatever gets them their return on the dollar...and 9 times out of 10 that will be something that can be sensationalized and spun into a news story of controversy...brought to you in sound bites of 20 seconds and squeezed into a 30-minute broadcast with 3 commercial breaks...and blaming the current administration.
BUT...in reality, it's the CONGRESS who really handles the majority of the stuff that affects the common citizen. They apportion money for projects, collect money to fund those projects, make bills into law (pork added for flavor), sets the law (or loophole) for daily lifestyle choices, determines who pays who (and how much of that pay the Congress gets back), and a very, very, very long and tedious laundry list of things that affect us from the day we're born until many days after we die.
Congress affects our lifestyle far more than any single "administration". Up to eight years of a President and we go on to the next. Everything starts anew. Congress breeds within itself (insert Sci-Fi analogy if you want) and can extend their political lives for years...if they bring home the pork to their State. And through attrition, those who wheel/deal/compromise/politic/play the nicest get to stay in the job. Those who have been there the longest get the power...whether that individual (or group) actually have a clue...and you can bet they owe their political souls to many. There are some good ones out there...they just don't end up in front of the cameras too much.
You can "join" whichever party you choose...sort of the anthropological need to be part of a pack, or gang, or frat/sorority, or club. Whatever you need to justify being a part of that group. Our (mostly) two-party political system is just an overgrown High School rivalry that costs billions upon billions of dollars a year (imagine our deficit if we just put that money straight to the deficit and not to the 4-year campaign trail). And there's really no reason to pit one against the other. It's just a label. There are Dems who oppose something like stem cell research and those who support it. Same with Republicans. And you can go down the whole social issues list and find many members of both parties that agree with the "other side" based on where they live and how it affects them. But, as we see everyday, there are many who get great joy by being part of that "social pack mentality" and spouting/yelling whatever happens to be the slogan of the day...whether it's true or not. Tell enough lies and eventually most begin to believe what you say. Tell the truth, and most doubt you until you absolutely prove it.
To summarize: it's NOT the President's fault for the large majority of the stuff that they get blamed for by the media, opposite party, talk show hosts, Saturday Night Live, the bartender, etc. We should all be looking closely at those who cry "WOLF" the loudest (see above comments about Congress and the media) and see what they've got hidden up their sleeves, behind their backs, in the trunk of their limos, and wherever else they can hide things.
In conclusion...ranting is best conducted with a cold refreshing brew at one's side, a skeptical look at the American media, and having a much stronger faith in the American common man/woman than the American politician.
Best of luck...
